Palm Treo 700p Troubleshooting
- Screen stays black after taking a picture
- Frozen or blank screen
- Phone doesn’t charge all the way
- Touchscreen does not respond accurately
- Unable to sync with computer
- Other person hears an echo
Screen stays black after taking a picture
You take a picture with your Treo and the screen stays black.
Check your screen closely to see if you can make out any dim images. The Treo is known to dim its screen when exposed to certain amounts of light. If you can barely see an image, press any button other than the power/end button. This should bring the screen to its original brightness.
A soft reset is one that does not delete data saved on the phone. To perform a soft reset:
- Press the battery cover release on the back of the phone.
- Slide the battery door downward to release the cover.
- Use the stylus tip to gently press the reset button on the back of your Treo.
In some cases, third party software may be causing the problems. To test if this is the case, perform a system reset.
To perform a system reset:
- Remove the battery as you would if you were doing a soft reset.
- While pressing and holding Up (^), use the tip of the stylus to gently press the reset button on the back of your device.
- When the logo screen appears, release Up.
- Delete the third-party application that you suspect is causing the problem.
- Perform a soft reset.
The wireless features of the Treo are not available until you complete this step.
If the above tests did not resolve the problem, a hard reset may be necessary.
WARNING: A hard reset deletes all data saved on the phone (including contacts, pictures, third party applications etc.). If possible, back up your phone to a computer before hard resetting to keep your data intact.
To perform a hard reset:
- Follow the same steps as a soft reset to release your battery cover.
- Press and hold the Power/End button while simultaneously pressing the reset button in the back of the phone with your stylus pen.
Frozen or blank screen
The screen does not display any images and appears to be blank or black.
Phone is powered on
Make sure the phone is powered on. To power the phone on, press and hold the Power/End button until the screen lights up and displays the Palm Logo.
Phone is charged
If the phone will not turn on, check to see if the phone is charged. Plug the included phone charger into a wall socket and plug the other end into the bottom of the phone. Make sure the arrow on the charger plug is facing up towards the screen. To assure the phone is charging, check for a solid red light in the upper left hand corner of the phone, on the same side as the screen. Leave the phone to charge until the red light becomes solid green. If there is no red light, there may be a hardware problem with either the phone or the charger. Once the phone displays a solid green light in the upper left hand corner of the screen, press and hold the power button. The screen should light up and display the Palm logo as it turns on and boots up.
Faulty Screen or Hardware
The screen may be bad or damaged. Check for any visual cracks in the screen or apparent damage to the screen of the phone. Otherwise the phone could have a faulty screen caused by internal connection problems. The issue may be caused by a faulty motherboard in the phone as well. Check with your local Palm Treo dealer for possible repairs or maintenance. Most likely the screen will have to be replaced and/or motherboard will have to be replaced. It may be easier to get a whole new phone.
Phone doesn’t charge all the way
You attempt to charge your phone but the battery never quite fills up.
Charger is properly connected
Make sure that the phone is properly connected to the charger and the charger is properly connected to the wall outlet. The charger should not be loose fitting inside the phone or the wall outlet. A result of a properly plugged in phone is the display of a solid red light in the upper left hand corner of the phone.
Charger is faulty
If the cable is properly snuggly fit in the phone and the wall outlet, yet there is still no light appearing on the phone, the charger may be faulty. Test another electrical appliance in the wall outlet to make sure there is power supplied to the outlet.
Remove and clean the battery and contacts
The phone may have dirt or corrosion on the battery and contacts preventing it from fully charging. To clean them, remove the back case by pressing the battery release button on the back of the phone and remove the casing. Pull out the battery carefully and gently clean the metal battery contacts in the phone using a cotton tip with a bit of rubbing alcohol on the end. Do not clean the battery with alcohol, instead only use a dry cloth.
If cleaning the battery and securing the plugs do not improve the charging, the most likely cause is a faulty battery. In which case, the battery will need to be replaced
Touchscreen does not respond accurately
When I touch my Palm Treo screen it does not select what I want it to.
Go to Applications and use the 5-way to select Prefs, and select Touchscreen. Follow the onscreen instructions to align screen and select Done when finished. If the problem continues, check for any debris under the screen of the phone. If you are using a screen protector, make sure it is properly installed.
Unable to sync with computer
You connect your USB sync cable and your phone does not begin syncing with your desktop.
USB sync cable
Make sure the USB sync cable is securely connected to both the bottom of your Palm Treo phone and to a USB port on your desktop.
Make sure HotSync manager is running:
(Windows) Right click the HotSync manager icon in the taskbar in lower-right corner of your computer screen and making sure the “Local USB” is checked.
- If you do not see the HotSync manager running, select HotSync Manager by going to Start->Programs -> Palm -> HotSync Manager.
(Mac) Find the Palm folder on your Mac and click the HotSync Manager icon. In the Connection Setting panel, set the local setup port to Palm USB.
- Synchronize. If the sync was not successful perform a soft reset (soft reset instructions above).
- Synchronize. If the sync was not successful try connecting the USB sync cable to another USB port on your desktop.
- Synchronize. If sync is unsuccessful:
(Windows) Uninstall Palm software, reboot your computer, and reinstall the Palm software with the installation CD that came with the Palm Treo phone.
(Mac) Contact technical support.
Other person hears an echo
You call someone and the person you called hears an echo of their voice.
Try lowering the volume of your Palm Treo phone to reduce coupling or feedback on the other person’s end. This applies to both the earpiece and the speakerphone.
Place earpiece closer to your ear to avoid sound leaking from your ear speaker into your microphone.
While using the speakerphone feature of your Palm Treo, try turning the phone face down rather than face up to avoid sound leaking back into the microphone.
