TiVo Series 2 TCD540080 Troubleshooting

The TiVo Series 2 consists of a case, the hard drive, motherboard, power supply, and cooling fan. Troubleshooting is usually fairly simple.

TiVo will not start

TiVo does not turn on, or hangs at "Powering up..." or "Almost there..."

Bad power supply

If there the TiVo will not turn on or light up at all, there may be a problem with the power. Check to make sure that the power cord is plugged in to a working socket and is connected to the TiVo. Otherwise, there may be a problem with the power supply, and it may need to be replaced.

Bad hard drive

Attempt turn on your TiVo. If you cannot here a spinning, or purring sound from inside. Than your hard drive has probably failed. Contact TiVo to receive a new hard drive, then install it.

TiVo randomly restarts

TiVo will randomly turn off then back on.

Power Cord

Make sure that the power cord is securely plugged into both the TiVo unit and the power socket. Look at the length of the cord and make sure it is not broken or frayed.

Overheating

While your TiVo is running, feel the unit and check to see if it is hot. If it is, check to make sure the fan is spinning. If the TiVo is hot and the fan is working, it may need to be placed in an area with better ventilation. If the fan is not spinning it may be broken. If so, the fan needs to be replaced.

Bad hard drive

Attempt turn on your TiVo. If you cannot hear a spinning, or purring sound from inside. Than your hard drive has probably failed. Contact TiVo to receive a new hard drive, then install it.

Bad power supply

If there is an issue with the power supply, then it needs to be replaced.

TiVo has picture problems

TiVo has issues such as: random audio & video freeze, audio stuttering, or shows a blank green screen.

Bad input

If the TiVo seems to be working and you can see the menu, then the problem may be with the input. Try testing the input directly into the TV or another device. If it does not work anywhere else, the input is most likely not working. Make sure the cables are hooked up properly, receiving output and not broken.

Bad hard drive

If you cannot access the TiVo menu, inspect the TiVo unit while it is turned on. If you cannot hear a spinning or purring sound from inside, then your hard drive has probably failed. Contact TiVo to receive a new hard drive, then install it.

TiVo servers are down

Wait a little while and see if the guide comes back, it is possible that TiVo's servers are down. Alternatively, you could call TiVo support and ask for the status of the system. If they are down, wait until they come back online, then check to make sure your TiVo is working.

Improper dialing settings

Check your TiVo dialing settings, this is the most likely source of this error.

Bad cables

If your dialing settings are configured properly and the TiVo servers are working, then the TiVo cables have probably gone bad.

TiVo overheats

Your TiVo often becomes very hot and begins to malfunction after long periods of use.

Broken Fan

While your TiVo is running, feel the unit and check to see if it is hot. If it is, check to make sure the fan is spinning. If the TiVo is hot and the fan is working, it may need to be placed in an area with better ventilation. If the fan is not spinning it may be broken. If so, the fan needs to be replaced.

TiVo remote issues

Your TiVo does not respond when you try to use the remote.

Bad batteries

Make sure the batteries are still working. If the light on the top of the remote does not turn on when a button is pressed, the batteries may be dead. If your remote batteries are dead, then they need to be replaced.
