just noticed that when the lid is closed and the laptop is off, i am not able to start the laptop with my external power button.

seems the hall effect sensor (sleep sensor) disables the keyboard

On many models they stopped with pads and from the ribbon cable connector you have to '''short short pin 5 to pin 29 or ground'''.

thanks for taking the time.

for mac book pro A1398 retina early 2013:

i soldered one wire to a small resistor just in front of pin 5.

the 2nd wire i clamped under a screw that holds the fan (ground).

and it works

Hello friend,

could you post a picture of it please?

All due respect] to Machead3 (an excellent contributor), this model does in fact have power-on pads (you by-passed the problem... so this is for future readers of the posting). Take a look at the pic. Here you go... This is a Mid 2012, but I know for a fact (because I opened up my personal early 2013) the pads are in the same place. Sorry if the pic isn't too clear.

I see two pads... is there a (|) power icon or PWR stenciled nearby on the board? Have you actually booted by shorting across these two pads?

That is correct. Those "pads" are actually R5015 and are critical part of the Debug Power "Buttons" circuitry. Placing a jumper across the resistor R5015 will start the power supply to the board.

thanks. i will try that.

but i guess this will not eliminate the problem of the laptop sleeping as soon as you close the lid.

?

thanks

Machead3 - yes sir, I have used the pads multiple times. They aren't so easy to get to , mind you, but they certainly work. As far as a stenciled icon, Apple is discontinuing this practice to deter exactly what we're talking about. Had the conversation months ago with a friend in the family (work that out for yourself, lol). Was reworking newer boards with RAM issues, damaged ports, etc. After working on a number, it dawned on me that there is very little board mapping (ie, your stenciled labels). Hadn't really thought about it since I knew where the majority of the board components were. So I called him up, and he confirmed it was a deterrent measure as well as a cost reduction since it will require less tooling in the manufacturing process (only something small like $.20/board). In volume, that adds up. Anyhow, just FYI. Don't worry Machead3. Would not post had I not tested something myself and confirmed its utility (unless I state my answer is in fact speculation). Thanks for being thorough, though!

Stephan - I assume your art installation involves an external monitor (one or more)?? If so, as long as you're using either the HDMI or the thunderbolt ports to the displays, the machine will boot and NOT sleep if you power it with the power on pads. It's the same as booting with the power button and closing the lid immediately before the LCD has a chance to light up. It recognizes you're trying to display to an external source and turns off the internal (when it's closed). Is that what you're looking to do? Just making sure I understand correctly... Let me know. Thanks

** Please forgive me if I've stated the obvious and have missed something in what you're looking to do.
