MacBook does not power up - DVD stuck in drive

When I power up my MacBook, the chimes ring and a blank white/grey screen appears...there is no apple logo or anything. I can hear a noise which I assume is coming from either the hard drive or the dvd drive. After a few minutes, the noise subsides.

There is a (SIMS 3) games dvd in the drive but I cannot eject it using the eject button on the keyboard. When I press the eject key nothing happens. The problem started when the game was being loaded.

Can you tell me how to get the dvd out of its drive and whether the hard drive may be the reason why the system is not powering up. If I can get the dvd out of the drive I plan to use a system disk to boot from the dvd drive.

Here are a few links to pages with suggestions for forcing a CD or DVD to eject. The simplest trick involves holding down the Option key while restarting, then pressing eject when you get to the start up disk selection window. There are also some more complicated Terminal code suggestions -- but definitely try the "Option" startup trick first. Good luck!

mister790,

Thank you for the links. I will follow up on them. Do you have any thoughts on whether there could be a hard drive problem that is causing the machine to not boot up or whether the boot up problem is related to the "stuck" games dvd?

Hey, hope it helps! Since you mention that the problem started when the DVD was loading, I'd guess that's the most likely culprit. But did you have any other problems with the computer before this?

When booting up, hold the mouse button to eject the disk.

I had this problem on a 2010 MacBook Pro in 2023!! The "Option/Eject" did the trick. I was thinking I might have to get inside the case befor reading this post. Many thanks, John
