LCD working but no backlight.

I have a black 2008 macbook with a screen that displays images but without a backlight. The LCD will flash white when it is first turn on and then turn black. Using a flashlight, I can see the login screen on the LCD.

If I set the backlight to 0 and then to the lowest setting, the backlight will flash on and then turn back off. Sometimes, if I'm lucky I can raise the brightness to 4 before the backlight turns back off.

So far, I have:

- Replaced the inverter, no change

- Used compressed air to clean the inverter connections, no change

- Reseated the LCD connections, no change

- Reseated the connectors from the inverter to logic board, no change

One more thing - when the brightness is at its lowest setting, the backlight flickers before shutting off.

Jack Byrnes, this could be caused by a bad cable from the the screen to the inverter board or the cable from the inverter board to the main logic board. Last. but most certainly possible, it is caused by bad CCFL's in your LCD.

Is there a way to test the cables without a multimeter? If I remember correctly, the inverter board puts out a very high voltage (600v?) and can fry my multimeter.

So far, I have tried wiggling both the connector from the logic board to the inverter and the cable from the inverter to the LCD while the computer is on to no avail. Rocking the screen from almost closed to completely open doesn't do anything either.

Is this enough to rule out faulty cabling?

You are absolutely right, do not test your inverter with a regular multimeter. It does sound like your cables should be okay, so the only other thing left would be the LCD panel (CCFL's) itself.

I had the same issue on a whith MacBook Early 2009 version. I changed the inverter and the inverter cable but this did not help. Then I changed the LCD panel and the screen was ok. My guess is that the problem is a bad backlight (CCFL) on the LCD so my advice is to change the LCD panel.
