How do I replace a damaged volume button?

I dropped my phone and slightly bent the case and volume button. I am able to still use the volume down but due to the dented button I am unable use volume up. I ordered a new button and am just curious if anyone has any advice on the best way to go about changing the button out?

If the case is dented you could try to straiten out the dent in the case or replace it to get the volume buttons to move freely again. If the actual volume button rocker is badly bent you can replace that by removing the case to get access to it. If the volume button rocker moves freely in both directions you can also remove the volume button rocker without removing the back case. I use an razor blade or tweezers and pry up at the bottom side of the volume - down button. It has to be done from the volume down area only as it has a flexible rubber piece which slides into the case. The top side of the volume rocker is not flexible. So when putting the rocker back in, slide the bottom flexible rubber in first but not all the way back in, then lift the bottom of the volume rocker up enough to clear the case and slightly slide it back till the top of the volume rocker can drop and slide into place inside the case. Then press the bottom area of the rocker down into place once it is lined up properly.

^ thanks for this - allowed me to replace mine without having to open the case

Here is some information you all may find useful if needing to replace the volume button assembly on your HTC One M8. The volume buttons flex cable is actually part of the SDcard reader assembly. So i have linked the part here for your reference: http://www.etradesupply.com/htc-one-m8-s...

The bad thing is the SDcard reader is only accessible by actually removing the display assembly from the mid-frame. You then will need to peel back the top right corner of the thin black foam layer to access the SDcard reader. You can then loosen all areas of the Sdcard reader/Volume assembly that are held in place with adhesive and remove the part and replace in reverse order. I was nice and took some photos of some damaged spare parts from a HTC One M8 I have, so you can get an idea of what you are up against. If you need help removing the back cover and display then head to this page for guides to assist you in that process: HTC One M8

Here are some photos that show where the SDcard is located in the mid-frame and where the flex cables run through. Hope this helps you out, and good luck.

Dude, you're a life saver! Gonna change it this weekend. I think its due to my battery swelling up, the contacts for this flex cable is loose, causing my volumes to go hay-wire....now the up button doesnt work at all after a week of going crazy....got me a new battery and flex, lets hope for the best.

Thanks again!

Glad I could be helpful. I know it can be difficult sometimes finding helpful information online. Hopefully I can find time to make a step-by-step guide for this procedure to help others in the future if they need more details to perform the repair. If you have any questions during your repair hopefully I can be of further assistance. Good luck Woody Chen in the repair.

To change the side buttons, you need to open the back cover firstly. Here is HTC One M8 Back Cover Replace video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFaAOHy6...

I'm still waiting on an answer also. None of the guides show you how to replace the ribbon cable that connects the volume buttons and it's either the sim or card.

I'm in the same shoes as you....i guess you gotta follow the guide until the bare mid frame...and the ribbon should be stuck to the mid frame. i just got my parts, will try and if i find anything new i'll post it here

I added my answer which may be helpful to you. Not to fun of a repair unfortunately.

Wow! They really buried the volume rockers/SD card reader. I damaged my volume down cable while taking the phone apart to replace USB port. I don't think it's worth going through all that work and then some just to fix a vol down function, which I can just lower volume on the screen with my finger. If I would decided to do it I would have to replace the battery as well since the phone will be totally naked at that point. I didn't find any battery replacements with any reviews online. The batteries on Amazon have bad reviews. Does anyone know if it is possible to solder the volume key circuitry back together? It's basically a 1mmx1mm square piece of circuit board with melted solder wire on it wrapped in black tape.

Erik,

I have the same problem.

For now I push on lower the sound and slide it by touch on the screen.

Please where did you order a replacement part from?
