Battery getting heated up

My phone was not switching on. I then removed battery and charged it using an external source. After putting battery back in the phone, I was able to start the phone, but the battery is getting heated up quickly. Moreover when the charging cable is connected to phone, charging light and symbol is coming, but battery percentage is not increasing.

Please guide me to check whether this is problem is with motherboard or with battery
