I have had my Dell Vostro 1400 for almost a year now and the past few weeks the battery has not been lasting long. I will charge it all the way but still the life will only last for about 4 hours. I went and bought a new charging cable so I that is not the problem. How do I know when it is time to replace the battery?

The best course of action would probably be to take it to an electronics shop and have them look at it, but given that it has such a short charge life it is most likely time to get a new one. You can find a replacement guide for the battery here.

Its pretty obvious the battery is going as its probably almost 10 years old. and 4 hours is still a decent charge as it probably didnt get much more when it was new. If it was 1 hour or less, get a new one but this one should last for another year or 2 yet.

@kennedyhallmark,Kennedy, This is directly from Dell official site. All rechargeable batteries wear out with time and usage. As time and cumulative use increase, the performance will degrade. For the typical user, noticeable reduction in run time generally will be observed after 18 to 24 months. For a power user, reduction in run time generally may be experienced prior to 18 months. How do you know when its time? Its time when it dies within an hour or so. The fact that it lasts 4 hours is still pretty good for a 10 year old laptop. When the battery lasts less than an hour thats when its time to replace. You should have replaced the battery as the charging cable was fine.
