Will not power up

Purchase Brother HL-6180DW in 2013, it's been sitting idol, unplugged, over a year. Another older printer went out, so I wanted to replace it with this one. When plugged in, it did power up. But then had to download drivers on the computer to use it, so turned it off. Tried to turn back on, but will not power up again. Tried several outlets and even changed power cords. I think it may be a blown internal fuse. Any suggestions? If a fuse, where is it located to replace it and where can I get one?

Anything happening at all when you plug it in and turn it on? Any lights or fans or just nothing at all.

Also, does the socket on the machine where you connect the power cord look ok and clean? I've been told that they can get oxidized after a while.. Doesn't explain turning on initially.

I have a HL-5250DN with the same problem. No lights, no nothing.

The power outlet and cord are good.

I can detect 110V through the switch on the brown wire. The TWO fuses on the LVPS are good.

There are no obvious burn marks on the LVPS board.

I don’t know what to test next. I’m hesitant to just tear the whole thing apart - if there is a better way, I’d love to hear it.

I have the same problem with the same model as well. Did you have any luck?

Hi, I have the same problem. could anyone tell how to check the output of the LVPS with a Multimeter? the connector has 13 pins (Zero Cross, Off Mode, Heat On, Dsleep, Relay drive 2, Relay drive 1, AC Direct, Pov, Pov, 24V L, 24V M2, 24V M1, Pov). thanks a lot for answers and hints!

How do you check if a capacitor is bad? Are there any signs or tools? I have a similar problem on another brand printer.

Hi @aaaron,

If you have an analogue or digital multimeter you can use either to test the capacitor but you have to remove it from the circuit board first, before testing it.

Here’s is a link that shows how to do this.

Thank you!

Could this be a reason why a printer may suddenly work- and then, next day- not work?

If the capacitator was damaged?

@aaaron

Possibly.

Here's a link that is a workaround if you can't get the printer to turn on.

Also in this link there is an answer as to why and it is a capacitor but that doesn't mean that it applies in every case. Scroll down to the post by "Yah" on 09/07/17.

This is not to say that there is one of the same value in your model printer but maybe worth a look.

My Brother Printer EMFC-J4510DW won't turn on

Thank you,

I’ll give both options a go.

My printer is a Lanier MPC3505.. large office one =/

cdtarp looks like there are three fuses on the "Low Voltage Power Supply". That is the board where your printer plugs into the AC power. It is called the LVPS since it converts your AC voltage to ~24 V. I do not have the schematic for the power supply so we will rely on you posting some good images of the power supply with your question. For that use this guide. It will allow us to see what you see and hopefully assist you with troubleshooting your board.

I have developed the same problem on my HL-2380DW. Try unplugging the machine from the outlet for at least a minute and plugging it back in. If it turns on after plugging it back in I am thinking it could be a bad capacitor in the LVPS. Don’t have access to an o-scope so I am checking on finding a new power supply board. Using a multimeter probably won’t do much good without a schematic.
