Brake light issue 09 Suburban

I have a 2009 Suburban. I noticed the passenger brake light not working so I changed the bulb but in the process, noticed the brake lights didn’t work with the truck off. I put the key in the ignition and turned it over, then the brake lights worked. What could be the issue causing them to not work unless the truck is on?

Brake lights on some vehicles just do not work with the ignition off. I believe this is a feature to save the battery in case there is a fault in the brake system, but I do not know. My car’s brake lights do not turn on when I have the key off either.
