Why does my phone rattle when it vibrates?

Every time I get a notification, I turn my ringer off, or I do anything that involves my phone vibrating, I get this weird rattle sound. It is very loud and annoying , I have to keep my ringer off 24/7 especially during school. I have looked up answers and people have said it is a loose screw or something of the matter. What should I do?

Mine started yesterday. A very loud lower quadrant rattle randomly. I read somewhere else its a loose vibration motor. I think im just going to get a new phone my screen got cracked too and its only getting worse.

If you go to settings, in the search bar type in vibration. Turn off the vibration for your whole device. Sound = gone. Your welcome.

Brinkley Jenkins - I am forever in your debt. I have only had my new iPhone for a week and the vibration has been driving me insane. It’s off now?

Brinley Jenkins I have been annoyed by this sound for a year now because I didn’t want to pay $200 to fix. Thank you so much.

Brinkley Jenkins u have done this but it still makes the rattling noise, what should I do

At this point, your iPhone X is probably still under warranty. If you have easy access to an Apple Store, I would make an appointment and have them take a look. Make sure you back up your phone first because if Apple decides to replace it, they won’t do anything to retain your data.

If you have dropped your phone, it could be that something broke inside or it could simply just be a lose screw. Your phone is more then likely still under warranty, so go ahead and take it in. Like @refectio said make sure to back up your phone before taking it in because Apple does not value your data as much as you would expect.

Sounds like maybe the tap-tic engine is loose. I saw this in a phone a customer brought to use. They said they took it to Apple and it wasn't something they could fix. I tightened a few screws and the problem went away.

how much would something like this cost?

It just happened to me, my iPhone has been pretty broken I have the iPhonex and some part of the screen doesn't work and sometimes there's also ghost taps, the camera is shaking, today I woke up to this, I powered off my phone last becuase of the random ghost taps that's happens once in awhile, ejne I first heard I thought it came from something else then realised it was my phone, I want to get a new phone but I don't want to spend money and my family needs it for other things

The clicking sound is a problem with the taptic engine failing. Your best bet is replacing the taptic engine - iPhone X Taptic Engine/탭틱 엔진 교체

The taptic egnine itself is a very cheap part, around $10 USD and most phone repair shops would probably charge less than $100 to fix this. As many mentioned before, you will lose the IP65 (waterproofing) rating.

You would hope apple would replace this part under an extended warranty program, but they don’t really care about their phone users much. It’s most likely planned obsolescence. fixit, and your iphone X is good for another 5 years at least.

Can’t believe people are suggesting to turn off vibration. What happened to this community. This is ifixit, not iworkaroundit or idontcare. However, turning off “System Haptics” is an option, if you don’t find loosing all haptic feedback.

You sound very sure when you say the tapic engine is broken, may I suggest to anyone who is having this issue and doesn't mind opening up their device to check that all of the screws holding in the tapic engine are not loose and are in tight before you go about buying a new one. Of course if you try tightning the screws and the issue is still there then yes this is a taptic engine issue that needs replacing but check the screws first you may not actually have the spend any money!

If going to Apple isn’t an option (which is your best bet for sure) then just open it up and see what’s inside. I open iPhones every day and it is not uncommon for there to be a screw loose. The iPhone X in particular is pretty flimsy inside near the top of the phone. You will lose some waterproofing when you open it, but other than that it isn’t a huge deal to open and iPhone X with a little bit of heat and some patience. If you do it, then you will likely get declined by Apple for any problems in the rest of your warranty period.

My father is having the same issue with us iPhone XR and we are confused. I’ve tried turning it of and on, turning vibration off, airplane mode, but nothing works.

I have the same problem with my XR. But I’ve had mine more than a year, so I guess I’ll be dismantling it soon. The problem for me is that the BACK of mine is shattered. I’m worried that taking mine apart, in order to figure out the rattling issue, will cause the rear glass to fall out.

my phone is the same way, i hear in may and you posted your comment in february did you fix it? if so how?

See a lot of people having this issue. Go to settings and type in sound at the search bar at the top, type sound, tap ringer and alerts. Scroll down to the bottom and turn off sound and haptics. Thank me later.

Turning haptics off doesn’t work. You have to turn the “vibration” off in accessibility settings (search haptics and it will show 3D & Haptic Touch). I just got my phone and it started doing that crazy rattling as well as clicking when I close apps or scroll on the side of the page… not like how it normally would. It is excessive. Turning off vibration solved that problem except I do like the vibration for calls and text but whatever, I can live without it until I can take it in.

I realize this is an old post, but I had a similar problem with my iphone7 lately. I tried shutting the phone off and back on, but nothing happened. I went to settings to turn off vibration as the rattling noise was extremely annoying. Surprisingly, it just took me to change the vibration from the default tone to something else then back and voila..the problem is gone.

I am not sure if this will work for everyone but I thought of dropping this here in case it helps.
