I need help finding a snapped off capacitor on my DIMM module

I have a 8 GB Crucial DDR4 CL16 2400 MHz ballistix sport lT white DIMM.

A component has broke off, I can’t find anything online that tells me what kind of capacitor I should solder in there. I have some images that might help. I gona try it solder my self.

Hi,

Have you got another identical RAM module that shows the component (how do you know that it is a capacitor?) which perhaps shows any markings on the component?

Cannot see to well on the pictures but are there any markings next to the solder pads on the board which may help to identify the type of component that it is, e.g. C something or R something or even F something?

I k ow it's a capacitor because I saw it on the internet called MLC but I don't know the voltage and stuff

@jayeff I agree, in all likelihood, the missing cap is the same as the other three tan caps. A missing cap probably shouldn't keep the memory from working although it may cause some issues due to the clock speed and peak power demands.

If I had this DIMM on my bench, I would remove one of the other three caps, measure it with an LCR and replace as necessary. It's most likely a 1 - 10 uF cap, looks like an 0402 or 0603. It would only need to be rated to 6.3V max as memory modules typically run on 3 or 3.3V.

Hi,

I couldn’t find any info regarding the value of the component, but I’m hazarding a guess as to what it may be.

I found this image of a similar RAM module (not Crucial but hopefully the same layout) where I suspect that the component may, stress may, be the same as 3 other components, or at least the same as one other that I marked on the board.

I have underlined a pattern which shows up twice on the board and boxed the components (one of which is the missing one) which I believe may be all of the same type and value.

You may wish to check this out on your particular module and see if it appears to be the same.

If it does appear to be the same and if the shown boxed components are identically marked as to their value it may be that the missing one is of the same value.

Again, this is only a guess and hopefully someone else may have a more definitive answer.

If no one else knows it still may be good to consider as a fallback option.

Hi that is a crucial ram an its the same as mine

Hi,

Do the components shown in the red boxes have the same markings on them?

Hi @refectio ,

Your comment is a lot better than my answer ;-)

Switch it to an answer and I'd vote it up.

Cheers.
