Touch ID problems after screen replacement

So i did a screen replacement. The connector on the long flex cable that runs along the shield plate was glued very hard to the front panel and took me 30 minutes to get off, but when it came loose it had a slight “bend” near the connector which was caused by me removing the connector. I could not see any tears or broken pins, i checked with a magnifying glass. I used the original home button on the new screen.

Now the touch ID is not working, the home button seems to work as it should except the touch id function. I opened it up again and reseated the home button connector, but still the same. Before i did the screen replacement i did remove the battery connector.

So how likely is it that the long “shield plate” cable causes this touch ID error?

And is that long flex cable also paired with that specific motherboard or is it only the actual home button?

And how likely is a itunes restore going to fix this problem (if its not the cable which is broken)? I really don´t want to do a restore since i´m at iOS 10.1 and would like to stay there, unless i know that will fix the problem.

P.S. Now when i think about it this same problem happened also when i did the exact same job on a iphone 6 earlier, never cared to try to find a solution that time though. So same thing happened 2 times on different iphones. That phone had also ios 10.

Am i missing some step here?

The Home Button flex is very delicate and it doesn’t take much damage to disable the TouchID function. Inpsect it again under magnification. Kinks, bends, micro-tears, bent pins on the connector are all things that can cause your issue.

The other possibility is that the Link Flex, the flex cable that runs under the Heat Shield is damaged (flex, connector etc.).

If the Link Flex is damaged, it can be easily replaced. However, if the Home Button Flex is damaged, then the TouchID will not be repairable as the Home Button is paired to the logic board and cannot be reprogrammed.

Thanks for your answer, but what do you mean with the "link flex", do you mean the long cable that runs along the shield plate? it could be the actual home button connector, but i think more the connector that is on the end of the long cable that runs along the shield plate, since thats the one i was prying off the front panel and it was glued on very hard and it got a bend from all the prying i did. The home button and its attached cable came loose pretty nicely and easily.

But are you sure that long flex cable does not need to be the original one? Since somebody who claimed to have been a "Genius phone repair level 4 tech manager", said that there is a chip in the touch ID flex cable that is paired with the phone? Maybe he meant some chip on the home button, but he used the word "touch ID flex cable", don´t know which one that is?

The Link Flex is the long one underneath the heat shield. It can be replaced as I mentioned in my answer.

The long flex cable is just cable, end to end cable. There is nothing fancy about it.

The actual encryption part is with the home button part.

Okay thanks, thats what i suspected, but you never know, nowadays they make the chip so small that you can´t even see them sometimes and so they can be hidden anywhere.

But okay good then i know that particular cable shouldn´t need to be the original one, unless the iphone can somehow recognise that a simple cable is not the original one?

By the way, i read conflicting statements online, so does the Touch ID even suppose to work after a screen replacement with a third party screen? Some mentions online that the iphone recognises that it has a third party screen and that it disables the touch ID as a safety precaution? Most of these statements were from early 2016 right around the time when the "error 53" was introduced after screen replacements by third party repair shops. Don´t know know if later iOS versions has fixed the touch ID disabling that occurred together with "error 53"? I´m at iOS 10.1 which was released October 2016.

Error 56 and similar are fixed. You will not get that error for home button failure. As colleagues Minho and Tom say, you can replace the flex elongate home button without problems (cable that appears in Minho's answer -link flex-). The paired part is the home button and the motherboard. You can change the rest of the pieces and it will not stop working.

There are different opinions because people without experience break the elongator (link flex) but it is not broken at first sight. They think it's the fault of the third-party screen. This is extremely common in people with little experience in this repair.
