Apple Cinema HD doesn’t turn on.

LED doesn’t light up or flicker or do anything at all.

I have no FireWire ports on my Laptop so i can’t try out the FireWire capabilities.

I tried the USB connector and Windows detects it as „generic USB Hub“ but doesn’t detect USB devices or flash drives plugged into the monitor.

I don’t have a DVI port and I ordered an adapter so I can’t test connectivity yet.

Does it need a video signal to turn on? I’ve been holding down the touch power button, Double and triple pressing it - no avail.

am i doing something wrong?

What is your mac system? That would help in knowing.

I use a PC and my system doesn’t matter because I have no way of connecting it yet (Lenovo Y740-17Ichg)

After freaking out I finally fixed it by unplugging the USB cable from the dvi to power block. But monitor still requires DVI /, USB to Mac to be plugged in .. now I have to leave that USB unplugged. So if your is not working play with unplugging the various USB connections.

I've had a similar issue, that I have an Apple Cinema Display (A1083) and I got power supply (A1093) from ebay, but when I plug it into the wall (no connection to my computer), I don't see any signs of life, even when I press and hold the power button. When I plug in the USB to my computer, still no signs of life in the monitor. I've tried unplugging the connections to the power box.

Any thoughts on what I can try next?

@gammanumeric the Apple Cinema HD display should work on any system that has a DVI-D port. For the 30" and the 27" you will need a dual-link DVI-D port to be able to use the full resolution. You may run into some issues like not having full capable resolution, brightness control etc. since you will need an appropriate driver for this monitor, but it should not prevent your monitor from at least turning on.

2. Check connector J4 at the main board. Reseat the cable at the main board and at the touch switch board.

3. Replace the touch switch cable.

4. Replace the right end cap that includes the touch switch board.

No power

1. Check the wattage that is printed on the power adapter. See the table below to verify that the power adapter shows the correct power rating for this display. (For more information, refer to Knowledge Base article 86800.)

2. Use a known-good power adapter, and check all cable connections.

Let us know what you find on your power adapter and let us know once you get your DVI setup.

FYI: The newer displays are just called a 'Cinema Display' and they have a DVI interface the HD model is the last ADC display Apple made. And yes, Apples naming is wacked! Even back then.

....and? " I have the 2005 Aluminum one" which would make this most like a Apple Cinema HD Display ( DVI) versus the (plastic) Apple Cinema HD Display LCD (ADC) You may call them that but for the repair purpose, Apple called both of these HD. Added the images to my answer for your benefit.

Don’t worry, people here are all wrong.

My Cinema Display 30-inch says “Cinema HD Display” on its aluminium frame.

And yes, you need 5V power from Pin 14 of DVI connector to turn it on.

Thank you Pan. I was scratching my head after fabbing up a 24.5v power source and not getting any action on the monitor but sure enough it came to life when the DVI cable got plugged into a computer that was on.

I was given a 23" HD Cinema Display missing the power adapter.

Today I snagged a free A1097 90 watt power adapter.

I've got it connected to a MBP Mid 2012 running Open Core with Ventura 13.1 currently.

Plugged in the A1097 to the 23" HD Cinema Display, connected the MiniDisplayPort to DVI adapter, connected the USB connector and powered up the MBP.

MBP turns on fine, the 23"HD Cinema Display is still off and not working. No LED for power shows.

Checking System Settings/Display Cinema HD is listed, but 23"HD Cinema Display is still off.

Reading through this thread I decided to unplug the USB connector from the Cinema HD to the MBP.

The second I unplug the USB the screen turns on, but the LED for power is still off.

The second I plug back in the USB the screen display turns off.

Disconnecting the USB connector seems backwards to get the screen to turn on, but I'm not going to question it since I've got a good screen now. Hope this helps others who might be in the same boat as I was.

* Note: The screen brightness controls on the Cinema HD work, but the brightness controls in the top bar on the right in MacOS 13.1 are greyed out inaccessible. Since I can't connect the USB and FireWire connectors I lost the ports on the back.

I decided to power off the Cinema HD before I put everything away, and the LED flashed on and off. If I power on the Cinema HD the LED flashes on and the off after the screen turns on.

What I found worked is unplugging the USB that goes into the power brick.

I tried unplugging and replugging all the connections multiple times. Didn't seem to work.

Are you sure you have a Cinema HD display? This display uses an old connector ADC (Apple Display Connector). You’ll need to convert it to DVI and then you’ll need to convert this one more time to DP (DisplayPort or mini DisplayPort) depending on what your PC’s graphics board supports.

By the time to get all of the needed adapters to get the signal converted, I think you can buy a better display for less. Besides we still don’t know if this display is even working.

I'd also suspect signal failure because of the multi adapter chain. The ADC adapter is also infamously expensive and will add up QUICKLY unless you can get one the seller f'ed up on the sale price good.

Manual says: „Note: You may also be able to use the Apple Cinema Display with a Windows PC that has an appropriate video card with a DVI port.“ and does not mention any adapters
