I haven’t used this device in many years and it probably is due to the battery but there is no low battery icon when power button is pressed/held (it is dead) and I want to know if it’s safe to charge or if it will even do anything if charged.

Over time a devices battery will die or drop to 0% if it goes under you will need to recharge them with a special board. I have seen this behavior on an iphone se charge it and see if it charger take precautions though battery may be acid leaking like a AA does in cold weather or when it gets old. Hope you find this response helpful.
