PC wont reset, "There was a problem resetting your PC..."

I was trying to reset my PC (HP Pavilion) but every time got greeted with the “There was a problem resetting your pc, no changes were made” message for some time until i got a new one, so i forgot about it. I dropped my new PC and the hard drive broke so i swapped it with the one in the old laptop to avoid having to buy windows. Now I am faced with my original issue, I cant clear the hard drive to get it running smoothly (The hard drive has lots of crap installed).

Is it anything to do with the fact that the old PC was upgraded from windows 7 to 10 with the free upgrade?

Is there a solution or another way my laptop can be reset?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Cammy

Hi,

What is the model number of the laptop?

Try the following:

Start the laptop and when it boots into Windows, force stop the laptop by holding the Power button until it shuts down.

Do this 3 times in a row, i.e. start > boot > force shutdown > start > boot > force shutdown etc.

On the 3rd attempt it should boot into the Windows Recovery Environment menu area.

Once there select Reset this PC and select the option you want and follow the prompts.

If you can’t get into the WRE menus this way or it doesn’t work either, try using a recovery USB disc.

The recovery USB disc can be created from any known working Win 10 PC. (try another PC not yours)

All you need is a 8GB USB flashdrive and about an hour of your time.

In the host PC go to Control Panel > Recovery > Create a Recovery drive and follow the prompts.

Once you have the USB drive insert it into your laptop and start the laptop. You’ll need to change the boot order in BIOS to boot from the USB as the first option (press F10 after it starts but before it boots into Windows - I think).

If you cannot boot from the USB you’ll need to get into BIOS (press F2 after it starts but before it boots into Windows - I think) and enable Legacy USB or CSM whichever option you have. Save the changes and restart the laptop.

The laptop should boot from the USB and show the same WRE menu options as mentioned above.

Hey guy, the hard drive that has windows on it is keyed to the hardware from the other computer so it’s just going to trigger the activation cycle. And the drivers for subsystems that are installed are mated to the other computer and there’s probably some incompatibilities with the computer you put it in now so you’re gonna have lots of crashing lots of corruption and the only way to fix that is to backup your data wipe the drive and do a fresh install windows and unfortunately have to pay for a windows license.
