XPS One 2710 - OSD NOT WORKING!?

Hi,

I have an XPS One 2710. It is a great computer but I want to access the OSD buttons on the bottom right corner. They are not working. I got the computer used from a friend, he told me that these buttons were not working. However, I thought the amazing iFixit community may have some ideas of how to get these buttons to work again.

I have Windows 10 running on the machine. It is i5 processor. Not sure if any of that would matter though.

I am adding pictures of what I saw after I followed the directions that you gave. There appears to be nothing here about a touch screen. Not sure if we are going down a rabbit hole but do you have any more ideas? Ultimately, I am really only trying to access the function of making the computer act like a monitor. I understand that one of the OSD buttons is supposed to do this function by selecting the source for the monitor but without the button I can not do it. I just wish there was a way around the button and I could get directly to the function of the button.

This is what I see when I follow the directions that you gave. Hopefully, you can see the images that I attached. There appears to be nothing here for a touch screen.

Hmmm. Not sure where to go now.

Hi @teamstarr,

Check if the Dell On Screen Display (DELLOSD) application is installed. Look in Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

If not installed, download and install it. (select Win 8.1 64-bit as the OS and also Application under the Category section).

When it has been installed, shutdown the PC in the normal way and when it has fully shutdown, start the PC and hopefully the OSD buttons should be working.

Thanks for your reply. I checked my "Apps" and the OSD application was not installed.

I tried installing the 64 bit version and I got this message:

"No compatible hardware found. The software you are attempting to install is not supported on this system. The software will not be installed."

I assume the hardware is still in the computer.

I was able to get the OSD application on my system but it appears to be a Windows 7 version. But there is still no lights or function coming from the buttons.

It seems really strange to me that the functions of these buttons and only be accessed through the buttons. I seems like functions that should have some other way to get to them. These are the types of functions that a person may want to access in other ways besides using the buttons.

I am not sure what I should do now.

So I just went and downloaded the Windows 8 64 bit version. I did not get the same message as above. The Application is loaded on my comptuer and says it is the 1.0.0.15 version.

STILL no function from the buttons.

Come to think of it. The "touch screen" is not working. I guess those little buttons behind the glass are connected to the "touch screen."

What happened to good ole physical buttons!!?? Now I sound like an old man.

Go to Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices and check if the touchscreen has been disabled for some reason.

One of the entries listed in this group should show HIDxxxx (Human Interface Device - not sure what it is called) Right click on the entry and select enable if it is disabled. If it isn't then the "enable" option is not there only the disable option.

In Win 10 to get to Device Manager, right click on the Windows Start button on the left side of the Taskbar and select the Device Manager link.

To expand the list under Mice and Other pointing devices click on the > symbol to the left of the entry.

Not sure or not if you have to restart the PC for it to come into effect if it was disabled and you enabled it

OK,

Try to install the Dell Touch panel Touch Utility Click on Win 8.1 64-bit OS and Category - Patches and fixes.

According to the blurb with the download:

"This package provides Dell Touch Panel Patch Utility for XPS 2710 that are running following Windows Operating System: Windows 8.1"

If still no good here's the owner manual

Go to p.134 to find the location of the touchscreen cable (#3 in image) and make sure that it is plugged in.

Not sure but maybe the touchscreen controller is on the motherboard and the screen itself is connected to it and the controller is detected by the BIOS which then thinks that all is OK because it communicates with it and not the screen, but this is just a guess on my part

I tried to install the Dell Touch panel Touch utility. I downloaded it, unzipped it, double clicked the setup exc file. But nothing seemed to happen. I did it several times. And I shut down the computer completely and turned it back on. Still nothing seems different. I can not even tell if anything was actually installed. Maybe because I am running Win 10, it will not take the Win 8 version of this somewhere....???

So, maybe it is just a hardware issue.

I will take a look at the manual later and see about opening up this machine. It is bound to be a great adventure.
