iMac fan stopped working. Replaced it with new but still not working

Hi

So i have late 2013 27 inch iMac. The fan stopped spinning. I installed TG Pro and sure enough it was showing 0rpm.

So i bought a new fan and followed iFixit guide to install it but even the new fan is not working.

What could be the issue here?

I read somewhere that cold solder on fan controller(?) might be the issue. I have attached the image below of the fan connector area. Can anyone help me point out what i could do to fix this without having to go to Apple?

Apple HT shows “there maybe a problem with fan PPF003“

I have same problem, I changed second motherboard and other fan still problem, but I saw the fan connected back of the board, one resistance was burnt, I sold one wire to short the resistance, the fan works. Fixed.

@taimurasad''' .. the fan will only turn on if there is a signal telling it to do so. I would check the connector pins for any voltage present. post your findings with the readings from left to right as shown in your picture for further assistance.

Thanks for the answer. So what you are saying is that i use voltimeter while the iMac is on to record readings at each connector pin? Can i do this while display is not connected? Thanks

What i meant to say was multimeter* not voltimeter

@taimurasad ... correct. doesnt matter if the screen is connected. we just need to know if there is any signal there that may indicate that there is a failure in the circuit.

looking at the schematic, the fan along with the speakers, lcd and gpu are all powered on the same 12v line. you should have 12v there somewhere. this pp12v so is enabled when the system is powered on so this is the only requirement for the 12v to be present.

ok when I put positive and negative terminals of multimeter on those two points (circled in red) together, this is what I got on meter. Does this mean anything? I am new to this so please help me if I'm doing it wrong. thanks https://www.icloud.com/photos/#0WhlDAtYK...

will need to refernce ground for proper test. do us a favor. put the meter in continuity mode, unplug the device from power and put the black probe on a ground source. (screw on mother board or laptop chasis should be fine) then red probe on either 2 pin from left in picture or second pin from right. which one rings out? need to know so i can get the orientation correct for the testing.

In case someone has this particular issue. My clients computer was having issues the same way as the OP. Replaced the fan and still the new one didn't spin up either.

The original problem probably stemmed from the original fan shorting/breaking somehow and then its affected the 12v pin on the logic board. As when I tested the original fan with a 12v 1a input as soon as I connected the negative and positive terminals it was dropping the voltage down to 2v and would spark as soon as I made the connection. The replacement fan would spin up after about 1 second of being connected.

This was a fix for my particular situation. It could be for you too. Please do thorough testing first to confirm it's just your 12v pin giving issues.

Also I'm not sure if this is the best place to tap into for 12v. The 12v is coming off a cap...

me too repaired my imac! I study the diagram and found the 12pin and have doubt if I could weld the pin with wire like a jumper and you solve my doubt! thanks

@aldeanolee if it is the same issue and has the same connection, yes you can.

thanks a lot! it worked perfectly!

I fixed, the fan plug back of the board , one resistance was burned, I put one wire to short the resistance, the fan works. Before the bad fan burned my two motherboard, this is why I changed second board and second fan still not working, don’t use bad fan again, will damaged board again!
