You did not tell us if this is your iPod or if it is new to you. The 2nd generation iPod will require Firewire to sync. It does not sync to either PC or Mac with USB.

UPDATE

Can you put your ipod in disk mode? # Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)

  1. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears, then release them. This resets iPod. When you reset iPod, all your music and data files are saved, but some customized settings may be lost.
  2. When the Apple logo appears, immediately press and hold the Previous and Next buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
  3. Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod should say "Do not disconnect".

Also try the diagnostics from here

If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.

1. You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. You should not see any orange. Toggle it on and off to be safe.

2. Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.

iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"

iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"

3. The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:

iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"

iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"

You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode.

4. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". The scroll wheel will not function while in diagnostic mode.

Last but not least make sure that your iPod dock connector is clean of debris and does not show any corrosion. Also check for bent and broken pins.

Thank you very much for fast feedback. It's my iPod. I have the original Firewire cable and a new one that I bought. I've tried both cables on both machines (a PC and a new macmini 2011) and they don't recognize it so I can't restore it

Thanks for this. I picked up a “new to me” 1G and 2G iPod. Then to give me a way to sync I picked up a Late 2009 Mac Mini. I installed Catalina and am trying to sync my music. When I try to put the 2G into Disk Mode, it goes straight to OK to disconnect, whether the FW cable is plugged in or not. Is that what should happen? I’m not seeing the 2G in Finder or in Apple Music.

I'm using the Apple 6-pin to 6-pin cable and this https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003... 9-pin to 6-pin adapter connected to the Mini

For my 2Gen iPod Touchwheel, this technique worked to get into Diagnostic Mode. The key is that after you see the Apple logo is to keep your fingers on the 3 buttons (REV, FFD, and Center button for about 10-15 seconds, or longer. Then the Diagnostic list pops up. Now how to get the software re-installed is another issue.

Problem Fixed! Just purchased an iPod Classic 2nd Gen & it was dead. Brought a Firewire 400 to 800 & 800 to Thunderbolt 2 & connected to my old Mac Trashcan. Let it soak for a while & the iPod eventually fired up. My Trashcan could see it as a FireWire hard disk but iTunes wouldn’t connect (s*d it!)…. So, dragged out my old 2011 MacBook Pro & realised there was a FireWire 800 port… connected my Gen2 to the OldCrusty with my FireWire 800 to 400 & it worked (Happy Dayz)… itunes even told me there was an update available & it installed perfectly & now I have a 2nd Gen Classic full (10gb) of my favourite pre 2003 tracks.

The moral of the story…

Don’t throw out/give away your old Macs if you want to keep Classic iPods going (plus don’t over complicate the cables/dongles/whatever)… K.I.S.S - keep it simple stu…
