Laptop not turning back on unless plugged in

I recently replaced the battery in my 9570, using the kit and battery from IFIXIT, along with a new RAM kit from Crucial. Since the replacement, when the laptop goes into hibernation mode, after being left alone, it won’t turn back on unless plugged in. The LED battery indicator light won’t even turn on when this happens. Sometimes the Dell screen will flash, then turn back off.

Once its back on, it can be unplugged and it behaves normally.

Did you replace it with a DELL battery?

This sounds like the computer may not actually be entering hibernation. Have you verified that the computer enters hibernation? It is possible for the computer to wake out of hibernation and drain the battery. I would check your power settings and verify, also make sure settings such as WOL (Wake on LAN) are not also causing the computer to come out of hibernation.

If I understand what you are saying, it isn't an issue with the battery being drained. The battery has power. It happened this morning and after I plugged it in and turned it on, it was at 90%.

@ahzidea Oh, I misunderstood. Have you attempted to run a test on your RAM using a tool such as memtest? It could be a number of things, but given the information you provided, I would personally start by testing the RAM. RAM can be responsible for a number of "unexplainable" issues. Amongst other things.

For possible hardware/firmware cause resetting the BIOS may help. Here is the link to the XPS 15 SErvice Manual (bless HP):

When removing the battery to reset the BIOS it may also be prudent to remove the coin cell RTC battery as well just to be sure - see p.50

Just me being pedantic.

p.29 only shows the main battery removal and sometimes it is necessary to remove the RTC battery as well.

It is mentioned in the procedure in the link you provided but there are a few more steps to get to it i.e. removing the systemboard and the OP might forget to try this if it doesn't work after disconnecting/reconnecting the main battery only.

@jayeff @aactech this is a bit more advanced/ pulling apart my laptop than I am comfortable with. I'll try it, but it will have to wait until I have a day where I can really focus on it. I will make sure to update this thread/topic when I do. for now, I just have to make sure I always save before closing my laptop and makeing sure a charger is nearby I guess.

Can someone clarify the comments about the coin cell battery please? Which BIOS settings should I note before starting? Are we are talking about swapping it for a new coin battery, right? What is the battery type? Even the service manual doesn't say. This is going to be more involved than the main battery, and I want to be sure I have the right coin battery on hand.

I have similar issues with the XPS13 not responding to the power button at all unless plugged in, though I can unplug it once the computer wakes up and run for hours on the charged battery. A complete shutdown before closing the lid helps sometimes it seems, but I haven't done a systematic analysis to see if the behavior is really consistent among sleep/shutdown/hibernate, etc.

Update that may help others: The CMOS battery is definitely not a CR2032 in the XPS13 9360. It's less than half that size, is covered in black tape, and has cables connecting it to the board. I didn't have a replacement, but I did disconnect it, reconnect it, and then put everything back together once more. That required a round of BIOS updating (time, date, and downloading/installing the most recent one again from Dell). Good news! So far, the machine is now behaving the way it's supposed to. It re-awakens after going to sleep instead of only re-awakening from a full shutdown. I you don't see another comment from me to the contrary, this fixed the problem. Just to be clear, I did not replace the coin battery in any sense other than disconnecting and placing it back exactly where it was; I replaced the main battery with a new one of course. Installing a new coin battery seems a good idea though if I can find a reliable replacement.

Sad to report that after a few normal days, we're back to problems waking/starting. If I do a full shutdown before closing the lid, it starts fine, but if it goes to sleep on its own or I close the lid, it won't start without plugging it in for just a minute during the boot. Maybe I should buy a replacement coin battery assembly. Other than that, I'm stumped.

To be honest it sounds like the Dell battery (original) was coded and the system is complaining about a non-original battery without the extra bit… I wouldn’t worry about the cmos battery replacement. Does the same problem happen with the old battery (assuming you still have it, and it sorta works)?

The old battery didn't have this particular problem - just not holding as much charge as it used to. I could swap it back in and see. thanks for the idea.

The CMOS battery is an ML-1220 rechargable battery that has a nominal voltage of 3V. I haven't been able to track down a replacement for mine yet outside of AliExpress
