Is Thermal Paste Necessary?

I've reviewed the guide on this fix and have not found any reference to the "Thermal Paste" mentioned in the Required Tools section. Is this needed to perform the repair? From what I can tell, the repair is just a matter of disassembling the case swapping the board and then putting it all back together.

Thanks!

it is best practice to replace the old paste with new...the old paste has been on there since day 1, subjected to temps for prolonged periods..it's going to dry out. Most of the guys on here use and recommend arctic silver 5 for these type of things (and the iFixit site sells it because they reckon it's good too!) reduces temps by around 5c if you check their site..got to be good for your mac's longevity. btw..we don't get paid, so no, this is not a plug for us to get a bonus!

the purpose of thermal paste is to help transfer heat from the CPU to the heat sink so that it can be dissipated. Think about running your car engine with no water in the radiator. Unless it is air cooled, the engine will run but not for long before it overheats and locks up.

OK, I've bought the toolkit since I was going to replace the logic board in my MBP A1150, until I saw a number of reports with similar problems to mine - random graphics freezes which don't apparently affect other functionality - which had been solved by cleaning 'goop' off the logic board. So I'm going to take out the one I have and see what shape it's in before I buy a new logic board. However, I was also wondering why the arctic silver paste was included in the kit. The how-to for replacing a logic board doesn't refer to arctic silver paste, and I wondered if it was some kind of replacement glue for all those bits of tape one removes during the operation. [An aside here: should I replace the tape bits, and if so, what kind of tape should I be looking for?)]

Now I know what arctic silver paste is for, thanks to Pollytintop, but not at which stage to use it. Presumably after cleaning the board, but just where does the paste go? Will I recognise the old arctic silver paste that I'm to replace? It carries the heat away from the cpu to the heatsink, but there's an awful lot of circuitry in a cpu, and I don't want silver paste shorting any of that.

TIA for any answer anyone can give.

How to Apply Thermal Paste. I use an old bank card to smooth on paste instead of a gloved finger. You'll know where to put the paste because it's going to replace the stuff you take off. It's a pretty thin layer you put on, you'll hear people referring to "grains of rice" size dollops of the paste, it shouldn't be squidging out the sides or over the chip edges. i think you can see from the guide just how thin the paste is...less than 1mm.There's quite enough in one of those tubes to do 10's of CPU's.

Thanks again, Pollypintop. One final question and I'm ready to go: it must be a special tape one uses in these circumstances. It has to stand high temperatures and stick to metal and/or plastic. Does it have a special generic name, and what kind of shops sell it?

TIA
