How do I replace display?

I would like to change from my 1080p non-touch display to a 4K option for my laptop someday. How can I do so please; if that’s possible.

I am also considering this… but I can’t find any display assemblies for sale, even on the Dell website. Where would I buy one? Is it compatible with previous years’ assemblies?

@zizajaun Usually takes ~6 months for the FHD LCD, and ~1 year for 4K parts.

The FHD screen tends to be a lot cheaper then 4K later on so best done new. If it cracks oh boy prepare your wallet. It's a luxury option new as it stands.

With the XPS, the best way to do display swaps is often to change the assembly. At least internally, Dell is using different connectors on the 4K LCDs compared to normal FHD panels. As such, you usually need to change the cable and LCD. Due to that issue, it’s best to spec it out with a 4K LCD now if you can do so, or swap the assembly as a whole unit.

Typically there’s no issues on the board side as Dell uses the same board connector for the entire screen range*, so the issue is on the other side -- when you open the LCD shell.
*During the HSW (Haswell) era, there were 2 machines I know we're either LVDS or iDP based on the base panel spec/if it was for gov't or corporate customers without a webcam, but used the iDP motherboard. At one point, I used 2 of those -- an E6440 and E7440. However, Dell no longer does that and they're all iDP. These horrible transition systems are total losses now when the screens die so we just chuck them when they're LVDS :-). Good riddance.
