Display flickering and tinted green

Hello,

As of yesterday I am having some issues with the display of my Galaxy S9. My screen is super washed out and dark and tinted yellow/green. It sometimes goes back to normal, but will randomly give issues again as I use it.

I did have a spill a couple of weeks ago, after which I immediately powered the phone off and cleaned all of the ports with electrical contact cleaner. Then I let the phone dry out for around 3 days. It was working fine after that until yesterday.

The issue:

  • Screen is washed out / yellowed, not very bright, sometimes flickering.
  • Using the brightness slider makes the screen even worse.
  • When powering the phone off, it shows the Galaxy S9 logo with a normal screen, and midway displaying the “Samsung” logo, it turns terrible again.
  • The screen looks normal in screen recordings and in screen mirroring, so I don’t believe this to be a graphics issue.

What I’ve tried:

  • Leaving the phone off for a few days in dessicant.
  • Restarting the phone in safe mode, didn’t seem to help.
  • Uninstalling recently installed apps, didn’t help.

In the past 2-3 weeks, there has been a number of reports about a similar screen issue with the S9. This is leading me to believe it may be something related to firmware or software updates, rather than related to my spill.

My phone is getting quite old as I purchased it on release. I was looking into replacing the battery and fingerprint sensor anyways, as they are both quite used. I figured I might as well get everything done at once.

I found this video on YouTube which shows what I believe to be the same issue - https://youtu.be/k8ybjAjardI - in which the solution is to replace the display flex connector of the screen, rather than the entirety of the display.

Can somebody explain to me where to get that part, and how exactly to replace it? The video is quite confusing, but the part is supposedly quite cheap compared to the screen. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on in the video.

@jaysf possible that his is what you need to do. My concern with all of this is that the symptoms you describe can also be caused by water damage. External cleaning and letting it dry etc. may not be enough. I would suggest you treat it like any other water damaged phone.

For now you want to stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse.This may further damage your phone.

The next thing to do is to clean it. Disassemble your phone using these guides Samsung Galaxy S9 . You must remove all EMI shields. If you do not remove those, you might as well not do anything. After you removed those, clean the whole board, connectors and all with +90% isopropyl alcohol. Follow this guide , and even so it was written for a 3G all the points are still pertinent to your phone. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. When it is properly cleaned, replace the battery. All these steps are to avoid delayed failure caused by corrosion. Best thing to do would be to clean it with an ultrasonic cleaner, but if you do not have access to one, this will at least help. Once all this is done, reassemble your phone and reevaluate. Until it is cleaned, everything will only be a guess. It is possible that you have a bad LCD and replacing the display assembly (or the flex if you have the ACF Bonding equipment and machinery which will set you back a couple of thousands) may fix it.

I think all you need is a new screen (as mentioned, you do not have the equipment needed to replace the flex cable by itself). I do not believe the motherboard is damaged, but I cannot guarantee how long the motherboard or.other components in this phone will last.

When you have water damaged electronics in the future, try to open up the device and clean the motherboard with Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol) abd let it dry.

@andrewsawesome Hey Andrew, I just took my phone apart right now and I see zero signs of water damage inside. The LDI is completely untripped and everything looks fine. I haven't removed the EMI shields yet as I'm not sure how to remove and replace them.

Hello again, I have my phone disassembled and I don't see any signs of water damage. Can you explain the process of removing the EMI shields? I don't really see a way to remove them without destroying them, but then I wouldn't be able to replace them.

@oldturkey03 Thanks for your helpful reply. I have backed up everything on my phone and I plan to open it up tomorrow. I do not currently have an ultrasonic cleaner so I will have to clean everything by hand with IPA. Fingers crossed that the LCD did not go bad, but it is definitely possible, as the phone is several years old at this point.

I did not realize how difficult the process was in the video, I definitely do not have the knowledge or machinery for a repair like that.

@jaysf you would have to either desolder those or cut them off. If you are sure that there is no liquid damage, try a new screen and see what it shows. Just make sure you check everything out beforehand
