iPhone X only making "connected to charging cable" noise, fixable?

Dropped my iPhone X in saltwater for no longer than 10 seconds, iPhone still makes the charging noise when plugged in and still makes a vibrations/typing noise when I try to enter my passcode. however the entire display is completely dark and will not show any signs of display/brightness. wondering if I order a new LCD and screen replacement + plus battery if this would fix the issues?

@tasman Consider this a supplement to the excellent answer by @hellomacos . First stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse.

Salt Water will get your components to corrode very severely. The very first step I would take is to disassemble your phone. Use iPhone X to disassemble your phone. Take a careful and close look at all components and connectors. Truly assess the damage. Look for major corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. After that I would suggest that you clean it a couple of times in sterile water, not drinking water (that might have helped right after it got submerged in the salt water). Use a soft brush and clean it very, very thouroughly with the sterile water. With the amount of corrosion that I envision, you will have to remove all the EMI shields. Once you got the gross contamination cleaned, use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and clean your parts some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for a Apple iPhone 3G but it is still pertinent to your phone as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning. Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. Do not use drinking water, if you need to use water, use sterile water. Also, you do not need to leave it to dry for a day. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and dissipate the water. The importance here is the cleaning. The best cleaning would be by ultrasonic cleaner but if not available, this will help. Do not forget to replace the battery. This is a must and not an option. It will fail if you do not take care of it now. Keep in mind that water damage is the hardest to troubleshoot and to repair. In your case it is possible that a new display will resolve all of your issues Hope this helps, good luck.

Thank you oldturkey03 for this extremely detailed and helpful response! I am definitely going to attempt a repair however I will ask because you seem very knowledgeable in the area of technology, would you be able to recommend any software/techniques to attempt a data backup onto my laptop before attempting the repair? would there be any hope for getting my data backed up with the current situation of the phone, I'm just thinking it may be possible because I can still enter my passcode but cant seem to do anything from there. Thank you so much in advanced!

@tasman only if your phone is still recognized by your computer. Try iTunes or 3utools and see if you can

@oldturkey03 Hey do you know of any IOS firmware I can run through 3utools flash feature to bypass my Iphone Locked To Owner Screen?

@tasman I am sorry but I do not.

@oldturkey03 Hey Mate! Thanks so much for that beauty of a guide you posted for me on the 14th of June, just got my replacement battery and LCD installed today after a mega cleaning with 99.9% isopropyl alcohol and….. the phone powers on perfectly and is functional! However the second I enter the last digit for my passcode it freezes for around a minute, does a short loading screen then goes back to the Lock Screen. It’s almost as tho it’s in a glitched loop of some sort, upon reassembling I did lose 1 1.1mm Yscrew for the logic board, could this be the possible problem? Hopefully you can help me out as you’re already done before @oldturkey03 you legend! Cheers mate

Hi @tasman

Sorry to hear about your iPhone but we need to work on this one fast!

First turn it off and DONT put it in rice and if you have distilled water, water the iPhone down to dilute the salt water as salt water is very corrosive to electronics!

Second take the screen off and unplug the battery

And dowse the logic board with isopropyl alcohol

If you can’t do this I would take it to a repair shop

Just don’t try and turn it back on until the problem has been resolved

If you want to do this your self I would order a new screen and battery, but I would take it to a repair shop as they have all the equipment to sort your issue out properly

Hopefully this helps

Thanks:-)
