I had the 128GB SSD fail and don't care to use it or replace it (if I don't have to). Problem is, it's really slowing everything down. Anyone know if it's possible to get the system to ignore the internal SSD, maybe by removing some KEXTs or something?

Ouch! Depending on MacOS version you are running you might be able to split the Fusion Drive set. Back in 2012 this worked How to split up a Fusion Drive
I gave up trying when clients would come in as the Mojave dropped the ability and I haven’t needed to do it in the newer MacOS’s.
Most of my clients just ended up replacing both drives and leaving them dedicated. The blade SSD is setup as the boot drive holding the OS, Apps and used for VirtualRAM and if the app uses it scratch space. Here we want a fair amount of free space. The old HDD is replaced with a larger SSD for the data drive.

Thanks Dan, once again, for your insights. Guess I'm going to have to rip out the logic board after all. With that in mind, any suggestions for 4TB NVME SSDs that are compatible?

@maccentric - mmm… I love blade SSDs! I have two RAID boxes which use M.2 drives for my Trash Can Mac Pro.
But! Apple did there own thing so you really need to stick with an Apple SSD from places like BeetsTech 2TB is the largest Apple had made. Or, go with a true built from the ground up SSD from OWC and again the largest I’ve seen from them is 2TB. I wouldn’t go with anything else or larger for the blade drive.
But I do know of a few people who have 4TB SATA drives in their iMac’s and using a 1TB for the blade SSD drive.
But we still have an issue which is the same you are trying to go with. 4TB is over the edge of reason in my book. You see as you make the drive storage denser, you raise the heat level within the chip, which in turn slows the write speed. (The reason I went with RAID). These ultra large blade drives also tend to fail at a higher rate due to the heat as well.
Thanks Dan, I think I'll go with 2 2TB SSDs, one SATA and one m2 drive.
@maccentric - I really don’t recommend using M.2 SSs in iMac’s as then don’t hold up well. Stick with a real Apple or OWC SSD. Trust me, you don’t want it, one day you’ll get a nasty surprise if you are planning on using your system hard.
