Vizio m65-c1 repeating video pattern without audio disruption . until

HI, I hope that you're all well. I have a vizio m65-c1 that's been broken for about a year. I've refused my wife's consistent efforts for me to toss it, because I'm convinced that I can figure it out.

What happened is that it sporadically started freezing the video in some sort of a repeating pattern (could happen in 5 minutes or maybe 25 minutes, not really pixalated, just broken and forming a pattern across the screen), but the audio would keep going on whatever I was watching. After a minute or two, the TV would reset.

That's about it. I took it apart, and put it back together repeatedly, and its still doing it. I looked for bad diodes like I found on another vizio tv that I was able to successfully fix, but didn't find any here (for what that's worth). I did clean a bunch of some sort of salt deposit off the main board (everywhere on it), but didn't find any bad caps that might have leaked, though, that said, I'm mostly looking for obviously blown caps.

For what it's worth, I just shifted the TV to check the model and it had reset when I looked back at the screen. Maybe a bad solder joint, but since I haven't found anything, honing in on the problem area would be a huge help.

Any help would be appreciated. I hope to have this TV in my new office or shop if I can ever find a bigger house in this market.  Could you please help me to identify the bad part so that I can replace it?

Thank you, much appreciated!

Best regards,

Josh

@docjosh14804 this "started freezing the video in some sort of a repeating pattern (could happen in 5 minutes or maybe 25 minutes, not really pixalated, just broken and forming a pattern across the screen)" can be caused by the main board video processor. It is also possible that this is an issue with the T-con board/circuitry. I am concerned about this "clean a bunch of some sort of salt deposit off the main board" which is never a good thing.

Remove the back cover from your TV and take a couple of good picture of all of your boards. Make sure they are well focused and large enough so that we can check components and traces by zooming in. It would also be great if you can capture what your screen looks like when it does it's thing :-)

Bad diodes would be an issue if it were related to the power board, which does not appear to be an issue with your TV. Blown caps are also not a common occurrence anymore. Again, you do see those mostly on power supplies.

You will need a multimeter and get a few small cans of freeze spray;-) we may need it for further diagnostics.

Update (07/29/23)

Okay, here are the test points that I could find, and that I have some data for. Schematics are not available (of course not, what was I hoping for) Anyhow, you have to have your TV on for that. So be careful not to touch things with your hands. T-con board and main board are not bad the power board is something to stay away from. It'll bite when touched on the power side. Set you meter at VDC something in the 20-30 V range. Place black on a good ground ( I use a screw that holds a board in) and red to test points.

Thank you for the help. I've uploaded some photos that I took earlier and will get some better pictures this evening. One of the photos shows the dirty board before I cleaned it. I have a multimeter, though I'm still learning it, and I can get some freeze spray.

@docjosh14804 the "green board" is your main board. that looks like water damage. Get some high grade isopropyl alcohol at least 90% (as typical with alcohol, more is better:-) The place the board in a dish, bowl etyc and use a clean brush and the alcohol to clean it. Follow this guide, and even so it was written for an iPhone all the points are still pertinent to your board as well. While you clean your board, check for any obvious damage, like burned or missing components etc. The greater the alcohol percentage the less you have to wait to let the board dry. It'll dissipate quickly. Don't use compressed air or similar. Just a regular few minute wait will be enough.

That mighty heatsink may need to come off as well. The GPU will be under there. Let's see what that all looks like. When you get some freeze spray, get a small tube of thermal compound as well. That is needed for reapplying the heatsink after.

Thanks, I did clean the board with isopropyl alcohol, though it was still having the same issue afterwards.

I tried to get the heat sink off the last time I was working in it and had some trouble with it. I'll give it another shot tonight, as well as ordering some thermal compound.

While I'd love to find a faulty component to replace, I figure that if I can at least hone in on a particular board, I can try to find a replacement.

@docjosh14804 going by the symptoms alone and seeing that you do not have a T-con board (you only have two boards in your TV correct ;-) my number one suspect is your main board. It has both the memory and the T-con board circuits that can cause your TV's symptoms. If nothing else, see if you can find an inexpensive (yes, used is okay) replacement board.

Or if you wanted to, you could try ro "bake" your board since that may reflow the GPU etc (no guarantees on that), but it's an option. For that you would definitely have to remove the heatsink Your wife might not like it, that you use the stove as your laboratory LOL

Thanks, I'll start searching for a replacement. I know that ShopJimmy was out of stock.

I believe that there is a T-Con (picture 20230729_195228.jpg)
