@frankdidente could be a bad battery. The battery has a temperature sensor, and a failed battery control board can give you that error. Start by replacing the battery.
Check this OnePlus Watch Teardown and see if this is something you would tackle.

Could be a bad temperature sensor.
Li-ion batteries shouldn't be charged below 40 F ( ~ 5 C) so there is a sensor to check for this.
If you warm it up, can you make the message go away?
