MacBook Shuts Down randomly

The machine is prone to random shutdowns at any given moment (running os, recovery mode, os installation) and I cannot find out what's the issue.

I've switched the SSD, reset PRAM and SMC, reset OS, it just does it (it currently is impossible to run any advanced task on since I formatted it and I was not able to complete the installation of MacOS due to said shutdowns.

I've come to notice that when the Mac shut down the cpu is running hot and the fans are running slow.

after the abrupt shut down, it enters a state in which the fan keeps spinning slow and nothing else. it can be turned on again after unplugging the batter and waiting around half an hour

@piergiorgi48925 check the 820-xxxx number on your logic board. Should be a 820-3476-A or a 820-3536-A if so, let us know and I am sure we can help you out with the needed documentation.

If your system is able to run long enough see if you can run the onboard diagnostics. Restart the system and press the D, if it works you should get an error message. If if fails see if you can get a snapshot of CoconutBattery to check the battery to rule out the battery and see if SMC is working correctly.

i cannot run Coconutbattery on it as the OS isn’t fully installed (it cannot handle the installation, it shuts down midway)

i already tried alt + D and the diagnostics gave no errors other than what i expected (the camera has a broken connector and i didn’t have the power adapter around to run tests on it)

i’ve tried booting it on a bootable Linux, USB, i guess it has enough runtime to work it out from there (it’s pretty lightweight on the hardware, it might have something to do with it). maybe there’s some way to finish installing MacOS from there

@piergiorgi48925 - If you don't have the needed charger then you are likely running on fumes! I would get the needed MagSafe charger for this system and let it charge over night and then you should be able to install macOS Big Sur (11.7.10) is is the highest version this system can support nativity. Ideally, you'll want to setup a bootable OS installer thumb drive with Big Sur as you can often encounter issues with Apples OS recovered services.

i do own a charger for it, i just didn’t have it around atm. i cannot complete any OS installation because the machine overheats before being able to complete them. the only thing that give me a 20 minutes window of usage is a ubuntu bootable sub stick

@piergiorgi48925 - Do you have access to a second Mac to build a bootable USB thumb drive?

Down load the required macOS from here How to download and install macOS then format the USB drive on your Mac so it’s GUID and a journaled file system. Then copy the installer file onto it, follow this guide to convert it into a bootable version Create a bootable installer for macOS then use it to boot your system with CoconutBattery. If you think this is a heat related issue download TG Pro. I’m suspecting your battery is the issue.

@danj i will try, even thought the machine shuts off on power adapter too

I think there are some issues with your Mac. It will be better to purchase a new one

Chushan Huang, you seem to have missed the entire point of this site; to empower everyone to be able to repair their own devices. To that end iFixit sells parts and hosts repair guides on every conceivable type of device out there so that things can be repaired rather than discarded. You're promoting the exact opposite of their philosophy by saying, "It's broken, throw it away and buy a new one."

We welcome new users and hope you can help us assist people in repairing and reusing their devices rather than advocating for disposal and replacement.
