Hi,
Found my old N64 tucked away and trying to get it to work.
It’s on a SCART cable, and I get audio just fine, but the image in the screen is INCREDIBLY dark. Like not there at all. With brightness/contrast settings cranked on the TV you can just about make out the image.
I’ve re-seated and cleaned all cables and the expansion pack, and tried multiple games
Any ideas?

Hi!
I advise to clean the AV port first. If that didn’t worked, then replace the AV cable for a new one. If that didn’t worked, then try the console on a different TV to determine if there is something wrong with the console. If the image is like still super dark, then open up the console and clean it all (also the cartridge pins on the motherboard) and try again.
Could you also share some pictures regarding how the console is connected to your TV?

Bit the bullet and bought a new cable. Now on AV rather than SCART and working fine. So either broken cable, or broken SCART port on TV

Alright. Probably the cable (in most cases). You could try the SCART port with the new cable. Could be the SCART adapter as well. Good to hear that all is ok now :)!

Have you tried using different games, and tried cleaning the N64 cartridge’s pins?
