USB C port diagnosis

Hey everyone, just about two days ago I spilled a some soda on the keyboard of my 2020 MacBook Pro m1. Close to the two sub c ports on the side of the Mac. Cleaned it the best I could, there wasn’t too much but clearly enough to damage it. Next day went to charge it and neither usb c plug would work or recognize there was a charger. Tried charging my phone with it and nothing. After some research I thought it was the usb c port so I ordered a used one from ifixit. Took apart the computer meticulously and extremely carefully. Computer was off obviously, disconnected battery first the other connectors. Got the old usb c port out and it was corroded and looked very old. Then reinstalled everything perfectly. Plugged in the computer and the charger was recognized and working, laptop fully charged to 100% just fine.

Went to plug it in tonight to charge it and I get nothing like the previous issue. The charger at first recognized that it was being charged but % wouldn’t change and then I removed it and tried the other and nothing. Then both wouldn’t charge. I’m now wondering if there is damage to the board or to the two usb c transistors or chips (not sure what they are called). When i inspected the board I couldn’t see any signs of liquid anywhere and the board looked perfect but I don’t have a microscope to inspect.

Any insights or ideas that anyone has would be appreciated. I’d rather not take it to a third party repair or to Apple.

I attached pics of the usb c port before and after. The one with red corrosion is the old.

First of all, without reading the full thing, the first sentence put me off. MacBooks are EXTREMELY sensitive with water. The problem with soda/coffee is that they leave sediments behind, sugar, caffeine... These can short circuit bits on your board. So it can be fixed, but it is a bleak outlook.

Update (05/23/24)

Secondly, of something goes wrong such as shorting USB ports with highly acidic and conductive soda ;) the SMC will trip and no power will flow. Sometimes it doesn't fully cut out the power and does it halfway if the current being drawn or shorted is over the limit but just over the limit.

However, M1 Macs don't really have an SMC, its kind of built in. What you can try to do is open up the Mac, disconnect the battery from the motherboard, carefully flip the computer over enough to press the power button. It should try to turn on for a second, drawing on the capacitors in the board, and then cut out. This is to fully drain the whole motherboard of any charge left in the capacitors. Leave it for a minute or so. Plug the battery back in, put the Mac together, and boot it up and see if it fixed it.

If not, come back here and let me know and we will see what we can do.
