My laptop is really loud

I can’t find my laptop model on Ifixit. The tag says”HP PavilionX360 convertible PC Model: 13-u169TU S/N: 8CG75197LK. P/N:1AC66PA#AB2. Warranty: 1y1y0y”

I have been using this laptop for 6+ years, and it’s getting really loud, I’m not sure it’s the issues with the fan or the battery.

Could someone please give some suggestions? Thank you.

@linchen71467 if it works fine it just gets louder, then the issue is most likely the fan. 6 years of use is pretty good and it may just be time to change the fan. While you are there, repaste the thermal paste as well. Here is the HP Pavilion X360 M3 Maintenance And Service Guide for your model. There are two different fan/heat sink assemblies listed, depending on the processor that your computer has. You can check that once you have it apart.

Since iFixit does not yet have a specific guide for your computer about how to change the thermal paste, use the generic one How to Apply Thermal Paste It will give you a good idea about what to do. BTW, once your computer is apart, clean the air ducts etc of any dust and debris. All of this should get your laptop to quiet down again. Welcome to iFixit.

Thank you sooo much for your detailed answer! They are so helpful. Meanwhile, this might be a really silly question: does overheating impact the storage of disk C? The disc C is nearly full, is there any guidance for how to clean it? Thank you!

@linchen71467 sounds like it is time to clean your drive. Backup your drive to a larger storage drive since you might be storing your your files to the HDD and after 6+ years it may just get full. Move the files you need to keep to storage. If you do not have a storage drive, I would suggest an external drive that connects to your computer via its USB connector or use a cloud storage to move those files to. External drives are luckily no longer expensive and easily connected. You can get those pretty much anywhere. As for size, I use is 1TB drives.

Pictures, music and documents can be easily moved to those drives. Delete unnecessary files and empty your recycle bin. If you are using Windows you can use the Disk Cleanup which will delete temporary files etc. Just type "Disk Cleanup" in the start menu. For Win 10 you can use storage sense which you can find under Settings==>System==>Storage. All of this should get you some space back. None of this is complicated just a bit tedious

First of all don't EVER give your device's serial number

As for the actual question, the fan probably either needs cleaning, new thermal paste, or one of the heatsinks is damaged and the fan is going at max speed to try and compensate
