How do I fix a charging issue?

For some context, i found my old Galaxy S2 (SGH-T989) in a box, i tried charging it but when it turned on a white line flashed and it blacked out, and anytime i try charging it, i have to hold pressure on the connector. So please if anyone knows what to do, please help.

It sounds like an issue with the charging port, assuming you've tried a different cord to verify that it's a problem with the port and not the cord.

Try cleaning the port with, say, some 90% or higher concentration isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, a toothpick and an eyeglass cloth. You can also attempt to blow it out with compressed air or vacuum it.

So if you're still not having any luck with it, sounds like you would need to replace the charging port. Unfortunately on your phone it's mounted directly on the motherboard, so replacing it would require soldering. You would need moderate soldering skills; it's not quite microsoldering but close. Here's a picture of the bottom side of the motherboard, that the port is mounted on.

If you're not confident in your soldering skills, this shouldn't be a difficult replacement for a decent repair shop. Of course, you could simply replace the whole motherboard; I saw one on eBay going for about $12 USD, not counting shipping. Here's the guide you'd need to pull the motherboard either for repair or replacement.

I have an idea. First, check the battery. Typically, a battery lasts around 3 to 4 years, so it might have lost its ability to power the device or could be completely dried out. Try boosting the battery and then charge it for 1 to 2 hours. Check if you're still facing the same issue.

If the issue persists, go to a spare parts store and check the specific battery model number. Test it there itself—if the phone turns on, it’s time to replace the battery. If the problem continues, check the charging port using a digital multimeter.

If the charging port is working fine, the issue might be with the display. Try using a spare display to see if that resolves it. If the problem still remains, it’s likely a CPU issue. In that case, you may need to reball the CPU or replace the motherboard.

It will turn on, but then it will proceed to die on the charger.
