The Dell XPS 15 9560 is a light weight, high-performance laptop released in 2017 that features a thin-bezel 15.6-inch screen with 4k resolution and a 7th Generation Intel Core i3-7100H.

Malfunctioning USB port replacement

Does anyone know if the USB-A (not the C port) that's on the left side of the laptop, beside the power connector, can be replaced or fixed? It doesn't work and Windows keeps complaining and throwing errors about overvoltage on the port. Thanks!

Here is an IFIXIT guide that will walk you through the removal and replacement of the motherboard. Motherboard R&R

What you need to do is FIND a replacement USB A jack... I couldn't find one for sale.

Suggestions... get your hands on a non-functioning one "for parts only" hopefully cheap, or find another defunct Dell with the same jack to steal the part from. That's what I did to replace a bad one on a Toshiba Qosmio that has since passed away (all the plastic parts eventually got too old and brittle to keep it working.}

Once you find the replacement de-solder the old one, install the new one and put it all back together.

There are lot of videos on how to do the necessary soldering if you aren't up on that easily found on-line.

Good Luck.

A few additional thoughts... I'm sure you already went through all the troubleshooting steps, but once you have it apart you might check that it really needs a new jack, I strongly suspect it does, but see if maybe it's just a bad solder joint somewhere... possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I'd also consider upgrading your NVME and memory if you need to or just WANT to while it's apart.

I'm being Lazy here... Since it isn't working I think the port is bad probably a short, but there are other possibilities. Check Your Drivers, (the USB controllers) in Device Manager, consider updating your BIOS, you can also get a light a look into the jack, see if anything is visibly wrong... I once had a USB cable partially broken off in a port, so there's a zebra for you to chase. Other troubleshooting steps in my opinion would be a waste of your time, but I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Again, Good Luck.
