It could also be some sort of setting on the iPad itself. Maybe it's the screen brightness, or background app refresh. But how much shorter is the battery life, anyway? It could just be random variation.
Given your iPad is less than a year old, it should still be under warranty from Apple. Have you checked with them regarding a fix or replacement?
