An external hard drive by LaCie, also available with a 320 GB storage capacity.

Hard drive not recognised

Hi,

I’ve got a “vintage” LaCie Petit hard drive that I had not plugged in in a while (understand a good 10 years). As I wanted to use it, I found out my latest laptop would not recognise it. I assume this is because an old driver on my hard drive. Any idea how to proceed to be able to reuse it, please?

When a LaCie Petit N2870 ABY25 is not recognized, it is usually caused by an outdated file system format, faulty USB ports, insufficient power, or a failed internal bridge board.

Because this is a older "vintage" mechanical drive model, follow these diagnostic steps to isolate and fix the problem.

1. Check Low-Level Visibility

Before troubleshooting software, verify if your computer's operating system registers the physical hardware connection.

  • On Windows: Right-click the Start menu, open Disk Management, and check the bottom pane. If the drive shows up here but lacks a drive letter, right-click it and select Change Drive Letter and Paths to assign one
  • On Mac: Open Disk Utility (via Applications > Utilities). Look for the LaCie drive in the left-hand sidebar under "External". If it appears greyed out, select it and click the Mount button at the top.

2. Isolate Connection and Power

Older mechanical drives are highly sensitive to power delivery and interface changes.

  • Eliminate Adapters: Plug the drive directly into your computer's built-in USB ports. Avoid using unpowered USB hubs or extensions.
  • Swap the Cable: A degraded USB data cable can supply enough electricity to light up a drive without actually transmitting data. Swap the cable with a known working replacement.
  • Check the Power Supply: If the drive makes a rhythmic clicking noise or fails to spin entirely, it is not getting sufficient power. Ensure you are using the specific 12V 2A external AC wall adapter rather than relying solely on USB bus power.

3. File System Compatibility

If you recently switched computers or haven't used the drive in a long time, the format might block access.

  • NTFS Format on Mac: A drive formatted for Windows (NTFS) will sometimes fail to mount or act erratic on newer macOS versions.
  • Reformatting: If the data on the drive is not important or already backed up, you can use Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (Mac) to format it to a universal layout like ExFAT. Warning: Formatting will permanently delete all files on the drive.
