Impact wrenches are power tools that are designed to deliver immense rotational forces. Impact wrenches deliver more torque than screwdrivers, drills, impact drivers, etc. Thus, impact wrenches are used whenever lots of torque is needed. This has numerous applications, including product assembly, heavy equipment maintenance, automotive repair, construction projects, etc.
Impact wrenches can be powered by a variety of mechanisms. For instance, impact wrenches can be powered by compressed air, electricity, or hydraulic power. Compressed air has traditionally been the most common power source for impact wrenches, but a rise in cordless electric devices has made electric impact wrenches more popular.
Impact wrenches deliver more torque than impact drivers, although the two tools are similar. Impact wrenches are also similar to air ratchets. Both air ratchets and impact wrenches are made to make it easier to remove and tighten bolts, but impact wrenches deliver far more torque than power ratchets. Power ratchets deliver torque around 35-80 ft-lbs while impact wrenches can deliver torque up to 1,800 ft-lbs.
Impact wrenches look similar to electric drills. They have a base, grippable handle, and rotating wrench attachment. Impact wrenches are made by a variety of manufacturers, including Ryobi, Dewalt, Ridgid, etc.
