The ThinkPad T500 was released in July 2008. The T500 replaces the 15.4-inch ThinkPad T61. The T500 has since been replaced by the T510.

Main improvements are: high-resolution 16:10 screens (up to 1920×1200 WUXGA), Intel Core 2 Duo Penryn processors, native DisplayPort output, DDR3 memory support, un-capped SATA II speeds, and optional ATI switchable graphics, with configurations ranging from the Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 up to the Core 2 Extreme X9100.

Unlike ultraportables, the CPU in the T500 is socketed (Socket P) rather than soldered to the motherboard. Because of this, you do not need to be stuck with the stock CPU and can upgrade the processor yourself later on.

The T500 does not natively support USB 3.0, coming only with USB 2.0 ports and FireWire. However, USB 3.0 support can easily be added by inserting an ExpressCard/54 expansion adapter.

It uses either integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD or switchable ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 graphics, supports up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM 1066MHz uses standard 2.5" SATA drives up to 9.5mm height for HDD/SSD, and includes an UltraBay Slim slot for a swappable optical drive or a secondary 2.5" storage drive caddy.

You can find the model type and serial number printed on the bottom of the Lenovo Thinkpad T500 or under the battery. From afar, you can identify it by the old school looking IBM keyboard, massive design, huge screen bezels and having written "Thinkpad" on top of the lid and "T500" by the right hinge.

The default memory that comes with the system will depend on configuration, typically shipped with 1GB, 2GB, or 4GB installed from the factory. The system supports up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM 1066MHz via 2x SODIMM slots.
