Background
The history of the Zebco 33 fishing reel began with the Zero Hour Bomb Company in 1932 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 1947, a Texas watchmaker named R.D. Hull got the idea for a new fishing reel after observing a meat counter clerk pull string from a fixed spool. He took his idea to the Zero Hour Bomb Company, and the first spincast reel guaranteed to eliminate backlash or a "bird's nest". This typically occurs when the internal spool spins faster than the fishing line is pulled out.
Company executives for the Zero Hour Bomb Company decided shortly after the first line of reels was released, they were no longer going to be in the oil well explosives business and instead focus on the fishing reel business. The new company was named ZEBCO.
Identification
The Zebco 33 reel is recognized by its cylindrical shape, which resembles a can. The spool does not rotate during casting, helping prevent backlash and tangled line, often referred to as a “bird’s nest.”
The Zebco logo is embossed on the anti-reverse control or main casting button. The number 33 is printed on a red background, with Titanium above it and Ball Bearing printed below.
