When you say "pull out the battery" do you mean the 4 x AA batteries?

When you say "pull out the battery" do you mean the 4 x AAA batteries?
Have you also tried removing/reinserting the small backup button battery (designed to retain the memory when the main batteries are changed) as well as the main batteries, to see if this resets the calculator and clears the problem?
Here is a link to the ifixit [guide|19372] which shows where it is and how to do it.
