The SSD will be screwed into the caddy which then permanently connects to the motherboard, until you go through the procedure to remove the caddy.
Caddies are third party devices, and not all of them will work with all systems, so you may have an incompatible caddy.
As a check make sure that the caddy is as thick as the dvd drive so that when it is inserted its connector will line up with the motherboard connector. As an example when replacing the HDD with an SSD, the SSD being only 7mm thick needs a 9.5mm spacer placed underneath it (usually supplied with the SSD by reputable suppliers) so that its connector lines up to match the connector position for the 16mm HDD.
