The Kia Optima is a mid-size car produced by Kia Motors beginning in 2000 and marketed globally with various names. Firsts-generation cars (2001-2005) were generally sold as the Optima, though the name Kia Magentis was used in Europe and Canada when sales in those regions began in 2002.

Optima idles high after Throttle Position sensor replacement.

I replaced the throttle position sensor on my 2005 KIA Optima about a month ago after reading a trouble code. Since I replaced it the engine now idles at 1100 RPM at first start and, after I drive around and then put the vehicle back in park, the engine idles anywhere from 1500 to 2000 RPM. I read online that this has happened to others that have replaced the TPS and it was suggested that they adjust the throttle by loosening the screws and turning the sensor in its mounting point. The screw holes are not elongated to allow such an action. I removed the sensor and checked to make sure that the flanges rested in the correct position and then screwed the sensor back in place. I still have the same end result. I did replace the old sensor back on to the motor to see if there was any change and found none so I swapped the new sensor back in to place. I have changed nothing else on the motor besides the TPS.

Kelly,

There is a long article about the KIA TPS on this auto web page. I hope it helps you.

+ChrisB Good article, about the two kinds of TPS. But poor information about how to adjust them in detail.

I matched the TPS to the old one. They are identical and are of potentiometer type. They are not adjustable to my knowledge and after reading the article twice over now it seems to state the same. I hate how you still have to go to the dealer even after a relatively simple part install.

Hi,

i don't know if that fits to KIA as well, but a lot of parts have to be recognized by the ECU, because they are connected via CAN-BUS. If your old "known" part gets broken, the ECU swappes into a failsafe mode, that allows you to reach the next KIA service with any part that fits. There, a new TPS is installed and the ECU is hooked up to a computer with KIA Software. This way the ECU learns to know this new TPS, and everything will work normal again.

So I am guessing the only way for me to get this sensor to run correctly with the ECU is to take it to a dealer and have them link with a computer?

Read the article in the answer of 040304 and check that you got the right TPS. Only if that doesn't work as well, i would ask a KIA dealer, if there might be a malfunction code in the ECU that has to be deleted or the ECU needs to be hooked to a computer to be adjusted.

For all those having this problem of high idle.......... all you have to do is swap the IAC and TPS connectors (they will fit into each others socket) . Thats right.......on my 2.5 v6 some dumbazz who did a plug and wire change swapped the conectors after finishing the job and also broke the no. 3 injector wire when the intake was removed. I purchased this car used (700.00) and determined all these things after troubleshooting numerous engine code issues. These were just the tip of the iceburg. I couldnt believe the half azz work some mechanics are capable of and worse of all it was to a woman............Unbelieveable!!!!!! Wake up America!!!!!!!

i had the same problem on my kia rio 2005, go too the fuse box under the bonnet and remove the cover, find the ecu fuse which should be marked inside the cover and there should be a fuse puller in the cover. pull the fuse out and leave for approx 2 hours, this should enough time for the loose its settings.refit fuse and drive car for a few days normally to reteach the ecu. this should solve your problem. THe ecu has settings in it for your old tps and needs to be reset for the new one

regards

That happened to me, too. I thought I might have forgotten to hook up a vacuum hose or something. So, I went back and was checking things out. What happened was the throttle linkage was out of adjustment, so I adjusted it and now it idles fine.

have you rebooted the ecu by disconnecting the battery for approx 30 minutes
