frank, sounds like you have a missing boot manager. The issues here is that your optical drive is also not working. You could consider repairing that and then reinstall your OS. Or you couyld try and create a boot disk on a USB drive and see if your can repair it. Quote from one Microsoft support engineer's (Azeez N) solution:

Try these two methods suggested to narrow down on the issue.

Method 1 :

To solve the boot issue:

1.Put the Windows Operating System installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.

2.Press a key when you are prompted.

3.Select a language, a time, a currency, and a keyboard or another input method, and then click Next .

4.Click Repair your computer .

5.Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next .

6.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt .

7.Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd, and then press ENTER.

•If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.

•If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.

Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

1.Restart the computer.

Method 2 :

You may also perform a system restore Use the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) to run System Restore (If System Restore is enabled on your computer)

====================================================================

1. Insert the Windows 7 installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.

2. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears.

3. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.

4. Click Repair your computer.

5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next

6. At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box, click on System Restore.

7. Follow the System Restore Wizard instruction and choose the appropriate restore point.

8. Click Finish to restore the system.

THANK YOU SO MUCH Oldturkey

Hi Oldturkey03,

Had a similar probleme. The command prompt worked great, after switching the attributes of \boot\bcd (attrib -h -r -s c:\boot\bcd).

Thank you very much...

Regards

You are the man. Thanks so much,

The change of ATTRIB is key, look for that comment before being able to access BCD to rename
