Why won't the system read CDs?

When I insert a CD, it will not play. The display says "reading", but no sound comes out. The CD plays fine on my computer, but doesn't work on this system. I have tried this with multiple CDs, and the same thing happens to all of them.

I have a very similar problem with a Panasonic SA PMX 70B. At times it plays but stops after ~1 minute and as with Michael Ebert's problem the same happens with multiple CDs. On removal and re-insertion of the CD the display says "reading" for a few minutes and finally "no play".

Could the problem be something to do with CD alignment or possibly something needs cleaning?

Any comments appreciated.

Hi @Niall ,

The CD player could simply be defective. What kind of internal connector does it have?

You could try cleaning the head with one of the Laser Lens Cleaner Cleaning Kits with the tiny soft brushes.

Otherwise the laser could be slightly out of alignment.

Mike,

Thank you for your response.

I will try one of the laser lens cleaning kits as you suggest and post some photos of the CD drive and its connectors after I open the box.

Best regards

@Niall

You posted your photo as an "Answer" which it is not.

So it looks like it is all proprietary so no simple replacement of drive. Just get one of the cleaning disks. I wouldn't open it up further. No Point.

Mike,

Ok and thanks. I will post another comment when I have tried the cleaning disk.

The system may be muted, or the speakers may be malfunctioning. Check the troubleshooting guide under the "CDs will not read" section for possible solutions.

The photo below shows the CD player after it was removed from the hi-fi enclosure. It seems that there are just two ribbon cables connected to the CD player.

Sliding the white plastic moulding, in the centre of the picture, causes the CD tray to eject but this does not really permit further access to allow the head to be cleaned.

It seems to me that the larger circuit board in the picture will need to be removed but I am concerned that this removal may give rise to some alignment issues when it is put back.

Any comments appreciated.

It’s the loading switch it has (Oxidised) not giving zero ohms closed 👍🇯🇲

Search cd Mechanism for micro switch, clean with fine Emery. That should solve the issue (common problem)

Hi @raymondcam98880

I prefer to clean with isopropyl alcohol, a good cleaning solvent, as close to 99% pure as possible. Even very fine emery paper scratches the contacts.

True but I like to resurface the contacts don’t have the problem recurring. The main point is is I am pointing out the problem.what do you think?
