Touchscreen randomly becomes unresponsive

Hi,

bought an iPhone 6 Plus on eBay. It's in perfect condition and I think I got a bargain. It has an issue though, which was why it was sold as not working: the touchscreen randomly becomes unresponsive and the phone needs a reset to make it start working again.

It seems to do it particularly if left untouched for a while.

I did a restore in DFU mode and it's still doing it.

It's 16 months old so out of warranty with Apple.

I booked an appointment with a genius tomorrow, but I believe that they won't fix that for free, even if I read on their forum lots of people complain about this issue especially after upgrading to iOS 9.

Also, worth mentioning that I checked the serial number of this iPhone and it qualifies for the Apple free iSight camera replacement program for the Iphone 6 Plus (rear camera producing blurry images).

Does it sound like a software issue or a hardware one? Thanks in advance for any replies.

Update (04/29/2016)

No, screen looks fine. No lines or anything like that. Phone has no dents and is cosmetically in mint condition.

Pretty sure touchscreen stops working only after the phone has gone in standby for a while. If I am using it, it works fine so I don't understand how it can be a hardware issue.

Update (04/29/2016)

Ah I have noticed that if I keep tapping while the screen is unresponsive, the tap on the screen will sometimes register but the only thing that works is a reset and sometimes I have to reset twice in a row for the touchscreen to become responsive again.

Update (04/29/2016)

My iPhone doesn't display a grey bar though. Also, yesterday it became unresponsive, I kept tapping the camera icon, the touch input finally registered and that unfroze the touchscreen without even a reset.

I'm starting to think it's just a faulty digitizer.

Update (05/15/2019)

I wanted to give an update since a couple of years have passed…

The phone worked perfectly for a year or so after they replaced the rear camera then the touch disease returned.

It definitely did something good to the phone as it allowed me to use it for quite a while before packing up for good.

I sold the phone on eBay as not working for about the same money I paid for it so I didn't lose money on it.

I repair phone and noticed that 90% of 6 Plus iPhones do not respond after screen change. I have even had them replaced at the Apple Store and they mostley fail to respond to touch. I believe that the driver for the digitizer shorts out if the screen is not changed imediatly after breaking. Apple should really recall all od the 6 Plus iPhones that have this issue as they are all mosly defective beyound reason. There is a lot of bad information on this thread and I hope this info is good

Hey guys, it's definitely Touch IC. You can verify this with a simple internet search for "Touch Disease". You'll find a lawsuit as well as petitions setup get Apple to take responsibility for this problem. You can voice yourself more and spread that word at:

I have had this same issue with Iphone 6 for three months and have had the screen replaced 3 times - Try turning off the fingerprint sensor (TouchID)

I did this, then force restarted my phone and have not had the problem since.

Hope this is helpful to some of you!

BS you not. Same issue here. Powered down. Gave a full charge. Powered it back up in an hour. Still same issue. Put on airplane mode. Turned on WiFI. To my amazement it is working fine now.

Took it to the Apple Store today. They replaced the camera for free in store since the iPhone qualified for the free iSight camera replacement program.

Since they opened it for the repair, touchscreen has been perfect (don't want to talk too soon though). It would become unresponsive as soon as the phone went in standby for a few minutes, but I left the phone untouched for a couple of hours and when I went to wake the phone up, touchscreen was responsive as it should. Even when I was taking it home and leaving it unused for a while, it was working fine.

Maybe it was just a matter of reseating the screen connectors.

This is touch ic disease, 100%. I wrote a blog post about this recently that explains the underlying design flaw in the iPhone 6+ that leads to this issue. The only solution is to have the touch ics replaced on the board by a microsolderer.

touch disease ic its common to iphone 6 plus becuase they design ip6+ w/o the EMI shielding on the board which is previously present on ip5s

Well if you did a complete restore, that would indicate that the problem isn't software. The next time it freezes on you, instead of resetting it, place your right hand on the top of your phone and your left on the bottom. With the screen facing upward, gently twist your right hand clock wise and your left counter clock wise, no more than 3 millimeters in either direction. Remember I said GENTLY. If the screen starts working after that gentle twist, you have touch disease and it is definitely hardware. Either find a shop that repairs that problem in your area, or take it to Apple.

Yes I had the dead iphone 6P for two days; and I read your post - IT DID WORK. Just twisted a little bit. I works for the moment. Hope it works for awhile.

After doing everything I read online including a factory reset, I tried your instructions and it did the trick. Now I just have to try my best not to drop it anymore. Thank you!

Fixed by twisting my phone. For real.

I had the same issue. I tried what taegveer mentioned above. To twist the phone. I took the phone out the case gave it a few twist and bingo all went back to normal and phone is working fine.

It worked for me but i want the solid solution what should i do ?

I faced the same problem - iPhone not responsive to touch. I've tried hard re-set and a few other ways without success until I removed the Screen Protector I've installed when I first bought the phone. now the touch response is as good as a brand NEW phone.

screen protectors DO inhibit some touch sensitivity, but that is different from the flickering grey bars and complete unresponsiveness of touch disease.

I gave my iPhone 6+ a little twist (holding top to bottom, rotating the top one way and the bottom the other) and it sure enough started working.. this was after 10 minutes turning on/off screen and full reboot. A very light amount of force was needed.. your results may vary!

My Iphone 6 was doing this to me for 9 months, and the only way to temporary remove touch unresponsiveness was to apply light physical twist to the chassis. After 9 months i replaced my 6 for 6s that is working good now.

ITS A FREE DIY FIX. It is not your screen or the iPhone 6 plus.

THE DIGITIZER CABLE AND RECIEVER IS EXTREMELY EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO DUST, GUARANTEED TO CAUSE THESE SYMPTOMS. If your phone is otherwise okay, check and clean the contact clips. Very little room to mess up, be cautious.

My phone was erratic for the longest time. I blamed my cracked screen until yesterday. I put a replacement on, didnt do a thing for this ghost touch/ unresponsive/ works fine/ frozen issue.

All signs told me a parasitic load was interfering. YES IT IS. But it is NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE.

CHECK your ribbon connector reciever ports. ONE SINGLE dust particle interfered with the capacitance on mine.

MINE HAD A TINY TINY SPEC OF DUST WITHIN THE CABLE RECIEVER SIDE. The size was about as big as one of the contacts in a cable, hard to see! I used a razor blade to get it out as it was the only thing thin enough to fit.

WARNING: USE A NON CONDUCTIVE PLASTIC BLADE. AND DO NOT MESS UP THE CONTACTS. My iphone 6plus works like new again!

I fixed it by replacing the screen. You can order a new screen from Ebay for $20. Typing was the biggest issue and is resolved 100%. I thought it was the software issue, but it is not.
