How do I take top off to reattach part that goes down to initiate draining and spinning. The lid has to be closed to initiate this feature. I stupidly overloaded and that piece came loose.

@marshas with the top loader you usually remove the whole cabinet. Take a look on here. There may be a different way for your issue but we need to have the exact model number and maybe a few images of the part that came loose. Use this guide to post images so we can see what you see.
