My controller doesn't work with batteries

My controller works but only with the USB cable plugged in. It will not work/turn on with batteries in. I have tried new batteries, clean metal conact in controller, updated via usb but still wont work with batteries just cable.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Make sure you hold the Connect button (on the XBox).

It could be a broken wire or solder joint to the battery port
