After screen replacement, proximity sensor is not functioning.

Okay guys and gals, I've got a tough one for y'all. I've tried every possible solution I can think of. Usually i can rely on my prior knowledge or google to provide me with an answer but I'm stuck. I'm the lead device repair technician at my local batteries plus bulbs. I say that to address that I am experienced in fixing all models of iPhones and have not had this issue with any iPhone 7 or 7 Plus. So a customer brought her iPhone 7 plus in today to be repaired, for the second time in the past month... Everything is tested in front of the customer before the repair and after. First repair was a complete success. So when she brought it back in, I was like, yes this will be so easy. No adhesive holding the frame down, then having to remove all that adhesive, easy peasy right? WRONG. After installing the screen, proximity is not working. Okay little annoyed at this point, instinctively I assume the flex cable is seated improperly. Re-seat the cable and still unresponsive. As the frustration builds, I think maybe there's something wrong with the alignment of the proximity sensor and the small hole on the back of the bezel. So I transfer only the proximity/camera/ambient light sensor cable to the screen, ensure that each cable is properly seated and the issue is still present. Went back and re-seated everything and at that point I just wanted to run and hide. I did notice that the proximity sensor was more of a tanish tent, instead of a pinkish/purple tent. I've seen the color change a couple times. One of those time being when I was a noobie and held the proximity over the heat gun just a little bit too long. I've never needed to use the heat gun with the iPhone 7 series proximity cable. So yes the obvious thing to do would be to replace the proximity cable, but my warehouse hasn't started stocking them yet and the one on here is 39.95... Okay lets hear some ideas. Replacing the proximity will be the easy fix, but small things like this bug the mess out of me. Thank you all!

I just solved this issue!! I tried all the things I found on this site and others and nothing worked. I haven't yet found my solution online. So here it is, super simple.

I simply scratched the paint off the cirle where the proximity sensor goes, it has two little holes that look like eyelets, well I scratched all right off, put it back in and voila! done deal, it's logical. Apparently the way they painted it on the replacement screen blocks the sensor so it doesn't register anything, but after scratching it you can see the little sensor "eyes" through the hole on the front.

You're welcome : )

Hi Andrea, congratulations nice job! :-)

If you mask the whole again with a black marker pen it will be dark again and completely solved.

Good fixing

This worked for me. I am so happy I found this thread. You are a genius! Thank you so much. Just saved me 350.00 from having to buy a new phone for the customer.

I had this same problem on My iPhone. A force or soft reset seemed to fix it. If these don't work, you can use "RecoveryTool Fix Recovery" to solve this problem.

I tried the black sharpie fix and when that didn't solve it, a soft reset did. Thanks StevenSeagal:)))

I just solved this issue! The problem is not that the screen is "somehow" rendering the proximity sensor useless, the problem is that, if you look closely enough, you will see that the transparent holes on the screen that the proximity sensor use are not "centered" in the socket. Therefore, the proximity sensor is not working.

With a sharp point, remove the holes (not all the way to the edge of the socket) and paint with a black permanent marker. The proximity sensor works again!

Surely, this relates to poor manufacturing!

What exactly do you mean ? Is there a way you can show us . I am having the exact same issue and it is so frustrating I can't fix it

What holes do you remove ?? Please show us pictures or a video of how you do this

Correctly that it's poor fabrication. Thank you LAR! Lifesaver ;-)

You have to remove the two holes that are painted on the back of the glass, right in the socket where the proximity sensor is placed. They are not centered. You need to remove the black (or white) paint in order to clear the way for the proximity sensor to work properly.

Worked for me. Thanks for the tips

Well you've got the right idea. Sounds like a new cable. However, have you tried a different display? Maybe that's the issue. Also yeah, $40 sucks, but it's a small price against someone who demands you buy them a whole new phone. But if you're the lead at a batteries plus, sounds like it won't be coming out of your pocket. Your boss should be understanding. No one is perfect

Yeah I transferred the proximity cable to a new screen and no luck. Yeah there's always gonna be that one phone out of the bunch that does something weird. I realized a little earlier I can special order a bunch of cables through one of our vendors. Little issues like this just really bug me. I never enjoy replacing parts for free but we always keep our customers happy. I'm just glad none of my other techs got this phone to work on.

Well...I mean it is $30....then again my

Shop is a bit different than everybody else's...

Who ever changed your screen forgot to transfer the little proximity sensor lens cover that was installed at the factory. After watching many youtube vids and reading alot of android websites it dawned on me to look at my old phone and see if I missed something and sure enough I did. When I installed the new LCD and touchscreen I didn't transfer it either but know it works just fine. If you don't have your old phone you can purchase a proximity sensor lens cover. Hope this helps someone

Does it make the phone to automatically turn off display without moving it close to the ear or any object while calling(or any time the top front speaker begins to work)?

Yeah its really helpful

in my experience almost always if the prox sensor you took off the old screen isn't damaged, it's the new screen that's causing the issue, try one or two other screens and you'll find one that works. I have no idea what about the screen causes that issue, but I've even taken the screen that the prox wouldn't work with and put it on another phone and it worked just fine.

I will try different screens next time

A new screen solved the problem! Thank you!

It's the holes of the proximity sensor's socket that are not centered.

I just made the hole for the sensor into an oval so I could see both of the gold sensors in the oval .. then blacked in the oval with a sharpie..

It's the aftermarket screens that are causing this issue!

Scratch off the eyelets gently and should do the magic. White screens will need white out.

Having the same issue. It seems like it is a common problem. You'd think by replacing thr FFC that would solve the it.. I replaced the front facing camera on two different i7+ and still the proximity sensor does not work! Very frustrating!

Hello,

I had the same issues after replacing a screen I could not figure out what was the problem but there is a detail I change to make it work again, I have added back the steel shield the one that come with 3 screws that Im not use to put back especially with iPhone they make those screw so tiny.

So I dont know maybe it is a bug or Im lucky

This is a common problem I am running into with screens. If the screen you took off is working, check the proximity on that one. If it works then you know that proximity sensor is working. Do this first with every IPhone 7? I am after going through 3 screens to get one that worked. Now you know that sensor is good, so if you have an issue with the proximity sensor going forward you know it is the screen. As Amber said it is usually the screens, not the sensor.

One problem with this business is the refurbished screens are not very good. I would love to buy the higher quality screens but then I am not competitive. So I get the generic but they cause me more labor. Not good. I am thinking of switching vendors but the one I use can get me parts delivered next day and has great prices. Oh will we shall see.

Okay everyone. I think I have finally figured this out. The iPhone 7 proximity sensors are adhesived down pretty well. My mistake was I wasn't heating the prox hot enough. If that adhesive isn't hot enough, when you try to lift up the proximity it may possibly cause a bend on the flex cable, which can cause the proximity sensor to lose its connection with the flex cable that the ambient light sensor and front camera are also connect too.

I’ve had 2 7 plus come in this week both with front proximity issues. Both phones were working fine. Tried swapping our a few prox sensors and issue remains. Tried updates and full restore on both. Something on the board must burn out. Does anyone know what it could be?

I’ve had 2 iphone 7 plus come in this week with front proximity sensor issues. Replaced numerous cables in both, tons of reboots, updates, and wiped to no avail. This sounds like a possible board issue. Has anyone else been experiencing this?

@jerry13391 Are all your replacement screens from the same supplier? The fact that the old broken screen works and the three replacements don't says that there's nothing wrong with your phone, but rather the screen you got is somehow incompatible with your phone.

I'd suggest just going to a different supplier for a screen; I've never had two different sellers in a row give me bad screens. You can get them under $20 USD on places like eBay, Amazon and AliExpress. Here's one that came up that should work.

https://www.amazon.com/ZTR-digitizer-Ass...

I've purchased this one in the past and it worked fine.
