Brand of drives Apple uses in their ADM's

I'm looking to upgrade the internal storage in my 2008 Intel XServe, but I really don't want to pay $549.00 for a 2TB Apple Drive Module (and I'd really need three of them). Does anyone know the kind of hard drive(s) that Apple uses in their ADM's? I know the model number will probably be slightly off, I'm simply trying to get as close to the real thing as possible.

I think I've got it. Instead of thinking about it in abstract terms, it helped to actually engage ye old brain and think about the possibilities:

  1. That I know of, Apple has used WD, Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, and Samsung for their drives.
  2. Of these, I've seen WD, Seagate, and Hitcahi in the XServe & XServe RAID.
  3. WD RE3's are used in the '09 1TB ADM's, maybe not exclusively. There's an '09 XServe that was delivered to my work a few weeks ago and that's what was used in it.
  4. My '08 came with 3 1TB Hitachi HD72101KLA330's as mentioned above.
  5. After looking at each of the possible vendors' enterprise-level drives (even though the ones used in mine are technically desktop-level, which is kind of surprising to me), I did a few searches based on the model numbers of the drives that Apple would probably use, Hitachi's 2TB SATA 3Gb/s in particular (HUA722020ALA330), and I found a link to a Google Groups thread that kind of confirms it:
    1. http://groups.google.com/group/macenterp...

Tada, hopefully solved, at least in this case.

Yes, the Hitachi 3.5" 2TB 7200RPM SATA Enterprise (Hitachi HUA722020ALA330) works perfectly in my 2006 Intel XServes. Available from Amazon and eBay (new and used).

No jumpers to set, no software to download. Just install in drive caddy and plug in. XServe (running Lion Server) immediately recognizes it and Lion Disk Utility can see and format/partition it.

England Green can I check whether you're using an Xserve with hardware raid or the software mirror "raid"

Hi, Neither. It's a JBOD disk backed up to an external USB drive. I keep all my critical data on a Drobo attached via Firewire.

Thanks EnglandGreen I was referring to the comment -

So I don't understand - Xserve only came with the option of a Mirror/striped hard drive config or alternatively with a hardware raid card. Clearly you could also connect an external raid or JBOD along with yr Drobo.

I was referring to the HD in the apple drive module that slots in the front of the xserve...

Thanks for responding so tho

Ian, My 2006 Xserve running Lion Server is configured with a internal 1TB boot drive and an internal 2TB drive. The 3rd bay is empty. I do not have either software or hardware RAID set up on this server. As I mentioned, I have a 2TB USB drive running TimeMachine backups and a Drobo Gen 2 4 bay via Firewire 800. I have 3 Xserves and they are all set up like this (all 2006 models) but without the Drobo. Hope this helps.

I have a 2006 xserve but can't get to read a drive over 750GB. I have tried WD, Seagate and Hitatchi with no luck. (2TB and 1 TB) Any suggestions? I have the recent firmware on the Xserve

@Robert Villaruz - Are you using OS-X or Linux/UNIX? You may want to create your own question with all of your details here Vs posting in such an old post
