This Computer is messed up HELP!

So, I have this computer and the screen is completely messed on it. I have a 19 inch TV that I have been using as my monitor, everything else has been working fine for years without the display. today I was removing my AUTOCAD and replacing it. I uninstalled it and rebooted the computer. NOW THE COMPUTER IS TURNING ON BUT NOT DISPLAYING ON THE TV! And usually I can tell if the computer boots up without the additional monitor (TV) because the messed up PC screen usually does a sort of flicker. I have come to realize that it is time for a new computer or at least a new display. My question is what way should i go about getting the files or being able to fix the computer.

Should I:

  1. Take the hard drive out Plug into my portable hard-drive’s adapter and into a new PC to get my files out.
  2. Take out the hard drive and swap it into my ''Toshiba Satelite C650D - 027.'' Is it even possible to do a straight swap since they are relatively the same PC; or is there a problem with the licensing that is connected to the computer hardware specific?
  3. Change the PC display in hopes that I will be able to see the computer display when it turns on.

I really need all the files that came on the computer as it is my business computer and is extremely valuable information.

Thank you all and good luck!!

If you stick the hard drive in another computer it will boot and you will be able to access your files, although you might have a couple driver issues. This can be fixed by running windows update. Windows will also deactivate, but you can reactivate it using the license key on the bottom of the computer, or it will automatically activate via a product key in the BIOS, depending on the computer. Sounds like your computer is pretty toast though, you could try repairing it, but you are probably better off with a new one at this point.

Okay awesome I have just read that it is a pain to swap a hard drive into another computer, and I have a big worry about losing anything on the hard-drive. Would i put in the license key from the bottom of the laptop that is toast or the laptop that i am putting the hard drive into?

Also do i have to do anything before pulling the hard-drive out of the workable computer to place the other one in?

@stephan98 It doesn't matter which license key you use, but if you plan on using this long term just use the one on the bottom of the computer you are putting the drive in to make things easy to keep track of. There isn't anything you have to do before swapping the drives, just make sure the computers are off first!

@stephan98 The product key you want is the one on the one that is working. I have done a similar thing before and it has worked for me that way. I don’t think there is anything else besides taking out the hard drive in the working computer and replacing it with the one that is dead.

Wonderful, thanks both for the responses!

One final addition. Is there any worry with losing data from the hard-drive that I am putting in? I already have the drive from the workable PC backed up.

@stephan98 There shouldn't be a concern with data loss as long as you don't drop the drive or something. A backup is always a good idea, so it wouldn't hurt to make one after you put the drive in.

@stephan98  I would refrain from messing around with activating Windows etc. Go the easy route and “Plug into my portable hard-drive’s adapter and into a new PC to get my files out. “ That way it’s a straight forward access without having to mess around with Windows. We all know how well Windows functions and it’ll ask you 101 different questions, reinstalling stuff etc,. The less you mess around with your HDD, the safer your files are for retrieval.

Do you think it is possible to Back up the HDD plugged into new computer via adapter-usb, with also having a portable hard-drive plugged in via adapter-usb?

All those drives should be showing up as separate external drives. If so then yes.

Like backup the HDD onto the portable hard-drive through the PC?

Yes that can work

Well, I think it is time for a new computer there. Repairing it would be kind-of impractical and who doesn’t like a new computer? (oh wait I cannot say that, *cough* Apple *cough*) Anyways, as @dastumer said you can transfer files over onto another computer in the meantime but Windows will de-activate and you will need to use the product key to re-activate it.

And which PC product key should I use?

@stephan98 Either key, but I used the one on the newer computer when I had a similar situation.
