Ibook g4 12" 1.2GHZ
I have just pick up my hard drive & now am trying line up the caddy & rails. Am having bit of trouble figuring out which side either one of them goes, any ideas?

Hi! Try removing the battery, Airport, and extended RAM so that they can be ruled out as contributing to the issue, and then immediately reset the PMU (hold down the power button while off and connected to AC for 10 seconds, until you hear a tone). If that doesn't do anything, try resetting the PRAM.
Is the computer making the chime sound when you power it on? What exactly do you mean when you say it powers up?
Next, try outputting the video to an external monitor. If you see an image on the external monitor, you know at that point you have a screen/wiring issue with the laptop, but that the board is good. If you don't see an image on an external screen, you may have a logic board or video chip issue.

If the display is merely dark, turn on the computer and shine a flashlight to see if you can see the desktop or Apple logo. If you are able to faintly see the desktop, you should replace the inverter to solve your problem. If the display is lighting up but does not display anything normally, I would plug in an external display to see if anything displays. If the external display appears to have issues similar the laptop's LCD, then you will need to replace your logic board. If the external display appears normal. Please comment here regarding the exact anomalies on your laptop's LCD.

Up for new ownership is this 12" G4 Ibook for parts or repair. I bought htis for my daughter to use about 6 months ago and never had a problem till one day there was no video. I swapped the screens and nothing. ( I tested the screen in it while it was out in another machine and it is fine). I also switch inverters but no luck. I'm really new to Macs and do not have the skills to go any farther. It is 1.2ghz and the serial is : UV442ANRRCQ. This unit does show some signs of wear as you can see in the pictures. The battery holds a charge for 3-4 hours easy. The Airport extreme card is also included. The combo drive is also in good working condition. This was a great laptop and hopefully you can fix it and find a board cheap. I removed the hard drive so that is not included though the drive rails are.

I would still do the testing I suggested, but after that I think the most telling test would be to output the video to an external display. Of course, if you have no hard drive, you're not going to get very far, but if you at least see the Apple icon or the option menu you'll know that the board is good, whereas if you see nothing, then you likely have a bad board.
